Is there a downside in linking to someone else's site?

While surfing the web I ran into someone else's site and I found a cool feature in a page of such site that would be useful to my web page readers; the question is: Would inserting a link in my page to that other site result in duplicate content or is there any other downside in doing this?.. Should I require a permission from the site owner to link to his/her site?

 No, for just a link, as long as it is not adult or site google disapproves of in their policy

 Linking to another site will not create duplicate content issues. You don't need to ask permission from the site owner. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to get a backlink from you.

If you think it would help your members, then go ahead and put the link on your site :)

 Linking to other relevant sites is why blogs are so powerful if you look at the really popular blogs, they are always linking to other people's sites.

I actually did a guest post on this on another blog a few months ago.

Not only does it help your readers, it trains them to click on your links to find some valuable information that will help them.

Then, when you put in a link to a product, people have their guard down and will click on your product links.
