How can I change permalinks properly?

I've got an older website where the permalinks were set to just plain. I want to change it to the post names. Is there a way to do this without my latest posts being ruined?

 If you have not done any backlinking to your website pages or interlinking that may result to a 404 page, then changing your permalinks is just fine.

If you have done some SEOing to your site, which will affect your backlinks and internal links, I suggest you redirect the old links to the new links.

 Agree with maryt! If you plan to change the permalinks, make sure you redirect each and every page (301) properly, or else backlinks will be of no use.

 Back up your site. Change your permalinks. Set up redirection.

To do this, all you have to do is:

Open up the WordPress page or post for which you want to change the permalink.
Edit the permalink.
Save the page or post.

 A permalink is the part of a web address that people use to access different parts of your WordPress site.

To change your permalink follow the steps-

1. Decide a New Permalink Structure
2. Change Your Permalink Structure in WordPress
3. Create a List of Current Permalinks
4. Set Up 301 Redirects
5. Fix Internal Links (Optional)

 it's very easy to change your permalink if you are using wordpress. There is option in sidebar in wordpress eiditor. After changing the permalinks your current url would give the 404 error. then you have to use the 301 redirect to the older url
