If you’re really serious about devoting your efforts to SEO, first and foremost you have to invest time and other resources into a finding a worthwhile keyword research tool. Many tools will present exhaustive lists of keywords, but with no promises of popularity or relevancy. For an effective SEO campaign, you need keywords that people actually use to find content and products like what you offer. Many reputable branding agencies, including my own (ProgosTech), use the following keyword research tools to generate traffic to their web pages:

1. Google Keyword Planner

Google Keyword Planner is still many people's go-to choice whenever they are searching for fruitful keywords, and it's no surprise, given that it's free to use so long as you have a Google AdWords account.

Google’s Keyword Planner was created to help AdWords advertisers manage their budgets more effectively when buying PPC ads from Google. It gives you all sorts of data, including keyword competitiveness and popularity over time. Despite its focus on PPC, the Keyword Planner is a great way to find keywords for paid and organic traffic to your site.

2. Seed Keywords

Seed Keywords helps you find keywords in a way no other tool offers you can ask other people to generate keywords for you! To start, you put a scenario before other users, asking them what people would search for if they wanted specific information.

Once the scenario is created, Seed Keywords gives you a URL that you can share with your team as well as other people. All these people can enter their keyword suggestions under your scenario as comments.

You can then download this data as a CSV file and search for each keyword in Google. You can even check the keyword volume of the suggested keywords in Google's Keyword Planner and other similar tools. Seed Keywords is hands down one of the most interactive, organic ways of hunting for keywords!

3. Keyword Spy

Keyword Spy is a keyword search tool used primarily to find the keywords your competitors are using, so you can apply them to your own website. Some of its features include:

  • Creating targeted campaigns
  • Showing your competitor’s keywords
  • Viewing SEO ranks for keywords
  • Insights into regional keyword information

Even though your competitors’ keywords may not be of great use to companies with little competition, the other features can still help you find the right keywords to target to boost your business.

4. Keywordtool.io

With Keywordtool.io, you are just a search and tap away from hundreds of keyword suggestions from Google, YouTube and Bing as well as mobile app stores. This keyword search tool free, fast, and efficient.

You can get your list of suggested keywords via the "Copy" button and then add it to Google Keyword Planner or other tools to look at volume and other data.

5. Word Tracker

Word Tracker is especially useful for small businesses who need help with a comprehensive strategy. The three main tools offered by Word Tracker are its Keyword Tool, the LinkBuilder, and the Strategizer. This last tool provides a unique bird's-eye view of your SEO efforts, along with a comprehensive list of keywords that no other website offers.
