Content Curation and the Affiliate Marketer

I stumbled across this article on Content Curation from SEOMOZ:

Content Curation Guide for SEO - What, How, Why

Content Curation in a few words, and from my own understanding, is gathering and listing various information on a topic and sharing it with the rest of the world. SEOMOZ has a more scholarly definition, but that's about the gist of it.

Why is it important to affiliate marketers?

These days, you need to build an authority site. You start out with a few articles, yes, but eventually, you need to update your site with new articles. You need to continuously update your site's content with information about your niche. Let's say you're in the fitness niche. You have information about how to lose weight, muscle gain, and diet plans. You need to constantly update your content with what is new in the world of fitness.

This is where content curation comes in.

On a daily basis, you look for content that you can use in your site. You get information from various sources, you take notes, you research. You look for forums and blogs that are within your niche and participate in those.

Content Curation helps you find sources for your niche as well as link building efforts. Gathering the best sources for your niche within your site is one step in becoming an authority site in your niche. Becoming a reference for your niche is a step closer to being an authority.

Hope that helps.

Let me know your thoughts.

Have a great weekend!

That's great Cecille, thanks for posting it.
It helps to make a few contacts within your own niche so you can guest comment and have others be guest posters for you too.
James has some good points on his post here...

Hi Troy,

Thanks for the feedback. It can be tough trying to find credible sources of information on the web so these content curation sites like snip.it and bundlr come in handy.

Have a good day!

In the article "Winning The SEO Battle Through Content Curation" Eric Savitz, Forbes staff writer, said "many are turning to content curation tools that help find, organize and share content online to ensure that their site is constantly delivering updated, highly topical, keyword-rich content -- making it a natural winner in the battle of Search Engine Optimization." Sites that use content curation usually update rather frequently, and search engines tend to reward these up-to-date sites by indexing them more often. In addition, "The content you curate for your chosen topic will automatically include the most popular search terms within your area of interest," writes Savitz, which can boost search result rankings.

To get the most out of content curation, tools such as Paper.li, Redux, and BagTheWeb, among many others, all assist in helping businesses sort through the abundance of online content to find the most pertinent information that fits their needs. In addition, some of these tools will even allow for creating original content and curating content at the same time.

As Eric Savitz writes, "Content curation tools that allow for both curation and original content, however, are imperative for the SEO success formula." Forbes.com recommends mixing original content with curated content to have the most success when using content curation to drive SEO.

I love curating, but most people need to realize that curation is about sharing news along with your thoughts and opinions. Just sharing other people's stuff isn't enough .You need to share why you are sharing it. I learned about curation blogging from Blog Success 2 years ago, and its more relevant today than it was then. I also use a variety of curation tools to help:

Zymanta -
they have a WP plugin, but I use theFirefox adon, which allows me to curate to any WordPress or Blogger style blog. Find images and relevant news blogs from their network. ( adding your site to their network is free and a great way to pick up additional backlinks too....)

Insights for WP - this is a wordpress curation plugin that allows me to search for Creative commons images, relevant blogs, Google news, Youtube Videos, and even my own blog posts from within my blog dashboard. I just go in under the post content field and enter my keywords and it finds relevant content.

CurationSoft - This is s paid tool, but they have a free version, although that is really limited in what you can do. With the pro version, I can search Google Blog search, Youtube, Flickr, Twitter, Blekko Search and Google News for relevant content based on my keywords. i can also import the feeds for all the blogs I follow (if you use Google reader, there is even an import Google reader function 2 click import for all your Google feeds) the feed reader helps me find the latest news on the blogs I read regularly and guest post on, helping me share my content faster and easier. It also has a drag and drop feature to easily share the content you find in your Wordpress blogs, and it is compatible with Google+ interface although FB doesn't like it. I can go on and on about this tool. This and Traffic Travis are the only two programs I have ever bought that I can honestly say that I use every single day. I really should run out some video tutorials showing it off.

Hey guys, content curation is definitely a great way to provide relevant, targeted content for your readers. There are a few ways to do it but it's certainly worth taking the effort to learn the skill.

My new site is a curated site and Google seems to be liking it.

Hi,
Interesting thread here on using curated content.

I've had a blog that I have been working on for over two years (a health information exchange directory) and I have been using a lot of content like press releases, content from the websites that I add to my directory, and youtube videos (that I add comments on).

My site is buried way down in the page rankings and the Google Webmaster site submission tool says my site has too much duplicate content on it.

So, I guess a major trick is how to use curated content and NOT have Google deem it to be duplicate content and penalize you for it. ??????

I really believe that content curation can be successfully utilized in almost any kind of online marketing, affiliation included. You might want to read this article: http://rubymediacorporation.com/blog/wh ... -strategy/ it gives some really great ideas. I especially like the Huffington Post business model based on three pillars: curating content, creating your own content and maintaining a solid collection of reliable resources. Most importantly, curation is easy to adopt on your website, especially since there are different kinds of software like Zymanta that make it even simpler (particularly to Wordpress users).

Absolutely Agree... it's so important to keep updating with fresh content as well as become an authority site. This is what the "Google Zoo" is looking for.

A suggestion is to use Google Reader to obtain information on your niche. This is a great resource for information. Once you find some news or information you can grab snippets from articles. Just make sure you give the proper credit to the content you have borrowed. You will appear as a professional to the search engines.
