Adaptive web design is similar to Responsive web design. Both have the same goal of giving the best user experience on any device used to access a website. The only difference is much of the changes to make a website "adaptive" is done through the server-side, and not client-side. Adaptive web design also uses scripting to adapt to various devices and screen resolutions while Responsive web design makes good use of CSS. The following articles can give you more information on the difference and similarities of Responsive Web Design and Adaptive Web Design.
