Errors in Google webmaster tools

I been working on a college/education related website for over a year http://bruteforcestudyguide.com/ . I made a lot of mistakes up front and some that still haunt me (like structure and name). But things were looking up, on Google I was number three or two for “becoming a nurse” and few other of my key words where on the first page also. I was getting about 180 uniques a day from Google. I rewrote my sales page and my conversions were up. Basically for the first 6 months I lost money then I was making 100 a month net and the last 60 days about a hundred a week. Not enough to quit my job but I was happy.

Then I saw my leads from Google drop to one a day! I did some investigating and found some weird errors and pages in Google's webmasters tools. Then I found a new folder on my site that contained a php script. My site was being used to distribute very nasty p-rn and viruses. I deleted the folder changed my password and contacted my hosting company.

So now what? I had a page rank of 3 on some pages w/ my blog having a pr of 4. Will my site regain the trust of Google or would I be better porting my content to a new URL. Any advice would be welcome.

That sounds like someone hacked your site? Your webhost must be pretty bad in terms of security then. Who are you using? I would fix up any errors you have in Google Webmaster Sitemaps and then wait and see how your site does. If it comes back, then fine. If not, just reword the articles you have and structure them on a new domain properly. Along with a new host!

Gah! That's awful!

I would do as Adrian says, and clean up that ... uh... interesting material and see what happens. Thing is, if you've been shoved into the Google sin bin, who can say how long you're going to be in there.

If it were me I would take this opportunity to re-make the site and address all those cringeworthy aspects that you pointed out before. Re-jig your material so that its different from your existing site (re-wording is fine), and then run the two in parallel and see which one picks up first. Just be careful not to link to your old site from your new site... it could be seen as hanging out in "bad company"!

It's a horrible situation, but it's a useful experiment at the same time ;)

Good luck! Soldier on!

Did you set permissions for your site so that anyone can work on your site? I would have a word with Ipower and be all over them.

No I did not set up for anyone but me. but I think I know what happened.

I usually work on a linux box at home but sometime I connect from other people computers including one that had problems w/ pop-ups . I think it had some nasty spy-ware that picked up my user-name and password.

I like the idea of a parallel site. I may try that in a week when I have a bit more time. It a good idea even if the site comes back. I am watching webmaster tools to see when the errors clear out.

I did a little googling and found this exact problem to very common. I searched for files in the error messeges below. I am posting the error messages just FYI. IF YOU DO SEARCH I WOULD NOT CLICK ON THE RESULTS.

honestly none of this stuff was ever on my site --- it was just a php script and a .access file to redirect.

This page lists URLs from your site that Googlebot had trouble crawling. As a result, these pages have not been added to our index, and may not appear in Google search results. Googlebot found these pages either in your Sitemap or by following links from other pages during a discovery crawl.

Not all errors may be actual problems. For example, if pages are blocked by robots.txt, this may be because you've deliberately chosen to block them; if that's the case, there's no need to fix the error. Similarly, if unrecognizable URLs appear in the 404 report, it's fine to ignore them. However, it's still worthwhile to review any errors you receive, and to examine any affected pages for problems. For example, Not Followed errors can be a clue that some of your pages contain content (such as Flash or images) that Googlebot can't easily crawl, or that their URL structure is not Google-friendly.

Whooooa!

I've edited that last post to make those links unclickable. Last thing we want is a whole bunch of forum users not heeding your warning and traipsing into dodgy territory.

That said... they're 404 errors. The pages don't actually exist. There's just a link to those pages somewhere on your website or in your sitemap (have you submitted a sitemap?) and they're basically "broken links".

Maybe Google have booted you up the bum *not* because of dodgy material on your page, but just because you've got a bunch of broken links? If that's the case it should be a quick and easy fix, one would hope.

If you've got the stats package AWstats on your hosting package (other stats packages might do it to, but I *know* this one has it) you can look for these 404 errors at the bottom of the stats report, and it'll tell you which page had the link that caused the error. Or, if there's not so much content on your site you can just copy one of those URLs and search all the pages on your site for links to those pages.

Also check your sitemap, if you've got one.

Let us know what you dig up ;)

Sorry Aletta did not mean to cause any extra work.

"bunch of broken links" that is what i am hoping for and with the redirect script gone the site seems clean at this point. I did create a new sitemap yesterday and uploaded to google's webmaster tools. Ill do have AWstats and will take a look. I ll let you know how things work out

Thanks again

Just wanted to give ya all an update.

Well as fast as my Google traffic disappeared it reappeared. I went from one hit from Google on the 15th to 105 on the 16th . I notices when I had a few sales notices from clickbank. I did not do to much in the time inbetween, a few updates to the site and some article marketing (did not have much time as i was preparing for my NCLEX-RN I passed yhea!!).

I did email Google webmaster tools and told them what happened and how I handled it. I have no idea if that made a difference or not. I am happy as I am developing a new product (recurring billing) and am using the income from this site to help fund it.

thanks again

And congrats on the seven letter acronym -- it's good to know we have a nurse in the house :)
