Hi,

Setting the external links (especially for comments section) to no follow is a safety precaution for blog owners in terms of SEO. Not all external links are helpful or beneficial to blog owners. Most of the times, the links in the comment section can hurt the blog site's page rank.

Because of spamming. People start promoting their keyword on irrelevant blog.

I am totally agree with @carolinemurphy. Spammer prefer to dofollow blogs sites rather than no follow sites.

Yes, well keep in mind also...that in terms of SEO, most blog owners set their "external links" to "no follow" so they don't lose any valuable link juice that may be going into that particular page which may be helping it to rank.

The more external links that are "do follow", it would mean for each of them...a certain amount of link juice would be passed on to them through that page.
