Trouble With DMOZ?!

I am trying to implement the SEO techniques Mark taught us in the lessons and one of them was to submit your site to DMOZ.

I went to the dmoz.org site and found the most appropriate category and when I attempted to submit my site for review, I keep getting some type of Invalid URL in IP Address Format error.

In other words, I tried every which way to list my domain THESE ARE NOT REAL DOMAINS - DO NOT CLICK PLEASE! (http://www.yourdomain.com, http://yourdomain.com, http://www.yourdomain.com, yourdomain.com) and still got the error.

I even went to my site's home page, copied the url from the address bar and tried to paste it into to the DMOZ site, but no luck.

Has anyone else had this error? Can someone investigate this and either confirm it was my error or something wrong with the DMOZ site.

Thank you for your time and help.

Hi fenway2k,

The site URL format should be http://yourdomain.com. I suggest you clear your browser's cache and then try submitting your site again. You may also refer to the following page on how to submit a site to DMOZ:

I checked this forum and other forums I frequent but I did not come across a member having a similar issue.

Please let me know how you get on. All the best!

Hi,

You might have some strange characters that were copied or something. Haven't had this problem before.

The other thing is, DMOZ updates EXTREMELY slowly, some people report having submitted sites years ago and still no listing. In fact, I haven't come across anyone that has gotten a site listed there in at least the last year. It's not as powerful or important as it once was. Still a good thing to do, but don't stress out over it too much.

Hello all

As esolutions said, don't sweat it. I have a feeling that your site might have been submitted even though you have gotten that error.

Don't bother with DMOZ it's over-rated and it may take several tries before they accept your site if at all.

DMOZ is nothing more than a website directory and there are tons of directories out there. The link that you will get from one of these directories is very weak in Googles eyes and in my opinion is not worth spending much time on.

This does not mean that you should not get listed in at least some of these directories, it is good to get links from many types of websites but these links will not help your rankings much and will bring almost no direct targeted traffic to your site. Look for blogs that are in your nich to post comments on with a link to your site instead.

Here is a big list of web directories you can submit to but don't make it a big part of your link building strategy. Google will not like seeing a bunch of links all of a sudden apear from these kind of sites and if your site is still new (less than 6 months old or so) you don't want to build more than a few links per day anyway for Google will see this as un-natural and maybe sandbox (de-index/ignor) your site for a while.
