If you use a sub domain it will be seen by search engines as a separate domain effectively doubling your work when doing SEO. If you want the blog to get indexed fast and help the main pages with freshness and authority put it in a directory, although the advantages of a directory have been made smaller over the years, it still is an easier and better option in my opinion.

My answer is anything you will choose is ok. I will not add some long description cause Matt Cutts already answered this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MswMYk05tk

I used the sub-domain option for my business and, although it's early days, we are getting good results.
