 SEO is always a need for every online business out there. But this does not mean that SMO is not effective or irrelevant. You need SEO for your business- no doubt about that but it is also a good thing to mix SMO with your SEO campaign. They can both provide you with traffic.

 SEO can be risky and there are no guarantees, but the payoff can be huge. Imagine getting free traffic years later without doing a thing.

 Social Media Optimization?

I'm new to affiliate marketing and haven't heard the acronym.

Guessing it has something to do with linking all social media networks like VerticalResponse does, but I'm going to Google it now.

SMO (Social Media Optimization)
You could identify SMO as a quick fix when compared to SEO. SMO is all about huge traffic spikes in short time, it does not require and wait time for the search engine bots to index your page. It directly fires your messages to the potential visitors.

In the same way that it can grow quickly, it can also fall off and be pushed down into irrelevancy. This is why a healthy mix of traffic sources is the good way to go.

 Your question implicates too much ifs so that a definite answer cannot be given. The answer actually depends on what is going on with your SEO or SMO strategy. And sure it depends on the niche you are working in. If you do SEO or SMO on the same level, you can get different payoff, for example, if you created a good viral piece of content for YouTube, it may bring you more loyal traffic.
I can say that SMO is somehow more unpredictable that SEO. In SEO, if to speak practically, people search for something, and you wanna them to find you. In SMO you have to attract people, and you never know what they like for sure.
The reason is why you ask such questions. Well, if you are considering what to use, keep in mind that SMO without SEO is useless. SEO without SMO can be rather effective, but the best way to get most traffic is to use both. Also I advise to use the tools that can manage SEO and SMO at the same time. By that you can do analysis in the most convenient way. I have been using Seo Power Suit recently, but I needed a web-based version so I moved to Link removed by moderator
