Pandas and Algorithms Got You Beat?

There has been a discussion going on over at Pot Pie Girl Jennifer Ledbetter's blog and the lady has been doing some serious homework on how Google ranks sites.

Her latest post is about as good an explanation as you are going to get for how the G algorithm works, how the manual review process work (yes - MANUAL review) and how Panda works within it all.

It is very good reading and very enlightening, especially for affiliate marketers so I hope that the link is allowed mods :)

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing! I came across her post early morning so it was an early morning read for me. This is definitely helpful to us affiliate marketers (and to anybody who wants strong online presence for their website/s). As always, at the very bottom of that article, is quality and people. Google *is* for users (and we affiliate marketers are frequent Google users too) and so to survive the Panda, you need to give value to the users.

Have a great weekend!

This is really a great article. :) It's amazing how Google manages to rapidly and accurately rank sites considering that they use manual reviewers.

Quality really matters in your articles. It does. And it always has. Build a useful site for people, not search engines.

Mark has posted a list of questions that Google uses to assess the quality of an article. You could find it on his blog post: Google Panda Update Tips

Yeah This is Indeed a really good article. And I could not agree more with Michelle. Build sites for people not for search engines.

However one misconception is that GoogleBot is some sort of Doctor In English. They can clearly not identify good English from bad English in their algorithms. And If that would be the case anyway It would make internet a place where nobody but those who has studied English at Stamford or Oxford University.

And there are 100 or not even thousands of variations of those languages. So if GoogleBot only Ranks Oxford university English there would be some serious issues :). Thats why off page seo content does not neccesary need to be that awesome if your only goal is to rank from it.... However the goal is not only to rank from it but also engage readers then its a complete different animal....

Worrying in the guide is at some page its said something along these lines... check the links and compere If you can actually buy the product at the site you are visiting.... If the link takes you to another site where you buy the product its a "thin affiliate sites". Then they instruct how to compere domain names in domain tools to figure out if its a affiliate site or not. That pretty much busts every single affiliate site that there is....

However Google is not the only way of getting traffic which is a good thing :)

True. There are other search engines that you optimize your site for and get traffic from. But still, your major concern should be the quality of your site and its contents. Regardless of which search engine you rank in, if your site does not offer any value, then no one will bother to stay in it.

Interesting that Facebook is also beginning to tout the 'quality' card and trying to improve users' engagement'. If all this effort to make the internet a better place pays off then it has to be a good thing for all of us. I find it incredible that Google has actual human beings taking a look at all the No 1 sites for every keyword, though.

Yeah it was only a matter of time before FB had to clean its act up.
It is incredible that they have manual reviewers but I guess that the only way to get the quality that they need is by doing it this way. I would imagine that the increase in search engine market share over the last few years more than pays for the reviewers.

I think that bit about Google hiring manual reviewers to critique the number 1 sites shows that Google means business when it comes to quality. Constant "Panda" updates can be a pain to affiliate marketers, but these changes also benefit us since we are big Google users too.
