Is posting comments on blogs worth the time and effort?

Hey everyone,

Repeatedly, I have come across the suggestion to post comments on relevant blogs to help bring traffic to one's Web site and to establish a relationship with a blogger who might be willing to do some cross promotion.

Today, for the first time, I devoted some time to finding relevant blogs and posting on them. Very quickly it became a chore. Either I had a hard time finding relevant blogs or, when I found one, it hadn't been updated in weeks or months. Also, I came across a lot of blogs that had no comments on any of their posts thus leading me to believe these blogs weren't read by many people.

I'd post on the more popular blogs, like lifehacker.com, engadget.com or copyblogger.com, but they aren't relevant to my Web site.

I was also thinking of hiring someone from Elance to post on blogs for me, but I fear someone would simply post a lot of spam as oppose to taking the time to read a blog post and write a thoughtful comment.

So, what is your opinion on commenting on blogs? Is it really worth the time and effort?

Hi Wendy,

Have you tried using http://www.technorati.com/ or http://www.icerocket.com/ to find relevant blogs? I use Flock as my browser and with it I can create newsfeeds for each of my topics easily. When something shows up in my newsfeed, I can go make a comment.

It might make the process less tedious for you :)

I also have a question about that:

When you post to blogs, you can add your website URL just beneath your name and email address (it's not in the comment text).

Someone knows if search engines actually spider your website in this case?

Wendy, if you can find decent blogs to post on, then yes it would be worth it. If it is to hard, then maybe you would be better off spending your time doing other things, like articles or generic link exchanges etc etc. Does this make sense?

Super, if the blog is being spidered, then I dont see why your link also wouldnt be spidered. Im not an expert, thats just what I think.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys!

I decided on a compromise. I'm hiring someone to go out and find me blogs and then I will post on them myself.

superaff: The other day, I used Traffic Travis for the first time and I did a backlinks search. I did notice a few blogs where I had posted in the past did come up in the search engines. So, Sean is right. :)
