How important is it to fix URL Errors (Google Search Console

I have a lot of 404 errors (and two server 5xx errors) that Google Search Console have highlighted. Not sure why they've been detected recently, when some of them are from an older version of our website, that hasn't been around for a while. Anyway, will I be penalised by Google for having them, and should I be trying to get them all fixed asap? Bit worried about how time consuming it will be!

It's absolutely crucial. If you really care about your Google ranking you'd be better served fixing these errors. Also traffic to your site could also suffer as a result, which could affect your bottom line also.

Hi

A DNS issue is extremely important, as it's the first step in accessing your website. You should take swift and violent action if you’re running into DNS issues that prevent Google from connecting to your site in the first place.

When you see this kind of error for your URLs, it means that Googlebot couldn't access your URL, the request timed out, or your site was busy. As a result, Googlebot was forced to abandon the request. Usually, when a visitor requests a page on your site that doesn't exist, a web server returns a 404 (not found) error.
