Google’s Removing Right-Side Ads?

Hello all,

Did anyone notice? Google Removed Right-Side Ads from search result but Will It Impact Organic Search Results?

Hi Lisa,

Yes it's confirmed that Google has removed the ads on the right side of their page results, see more here: http://searchengineland.com/google-no-a ... lts-242997

I think the change will also affect organic results. However, I am not sure if it is a positive or a negative change.

One possible (positive) change we may see is fewer ads may mean more organic results on the page.

But if there will be a fourth ad on Google SERPs, the organic results may be pushed further down the page, which will decrease visibility. This may be a negative impact.

Thanks for the share Mary.
I read the article a few times and I think I read a few things "between the lines" as they say.

Why would Google do this?
My guess is that Google was not making as much money as they did in the past from right side adds due to "add blindness" which is a phrase referring to people automatically ignoring right side adds because they are so used to having them around.

How will this effect us as marketers?
For those of us doing pay-per-click (PPC) advertising this will likely cause more competition(but maybe not too much for most keywords) for normal top of page adds which will make things more difficult for the average person to compete for add spots.

Unfortunately, I don't see any substantial positives for us as marketers but any thoughts to the contrary are always welcome.

Never Give Up!!!

Less ad space = more competition = increased revenue for Google.

Maybe Google was losing advertisers so had to tighten things up? Just guessing.

Time will tell, but typically, changes benefit Google, not necessarily anyone else.

What about google product ads? It says they're an exception and will still appear above or to the right of the search results. Could you create a google product ad for your free book that you're giving away to get people to sign up to your list, and then send those ad clicks to a squeeze page where they can get the book? Or do people even do that?

If you want to create your own PLA, you need to set-up a merchant account in Google : https://support.google.com/merchants/ and then create a shopping campaigns in Google.

You can learn more bout PLA here: https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/2454022

Google is rolling out a dramatic change that removes ads from the right side of its desktop search results, and places ads only at the top and/or bottom of the page. At the same time, the company says it may show an additional ad — four, not three — above the search results for what it calls “highly commercial queries.”
