Well the 2 are just about the same.
Search Engine Positioning means you are altering your site to perform well in the search engines and to get to a desired spot.

I don't see any difference. :) The main goal of SEO is to get the top position on search engine results pages.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks," the more searchers will visit that site. The leading search engines, Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft, use crawlers to find pages for their algorithmic search results.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs). According to the Search Engine Marketing Professionals Organization, SEM methods include: search engine optimization (or SEO), paid placement, and paid inclusion.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

It is the practice of maximizing the volume or quality of traffic to a web site (such as a blog) from search engines via "natural" or un-paid search results as opposed to other forms of search engine marketing ("SEM") which may deal with paid inclusion.

I don't see any difference either, except for the nomenclature. A rose by any other name would smell just as sweet :)
