I’ve been brainstorming my next big adventure

I’ve been brainstorming my next big adventure and Kyrgyzstan keeps popping up as a top destination for road trips. The landscape looks absolutely insane with those mountain passes. I’m from the USA and usually stick to the National Parks back home, but this is a completely different scale. Has anyone navigated these routes? I am worried about the terrain and whether a standard sedan is even worth considering.

You made me look it up - and I wasn't disappointed! Seriously, those mountains I check look so beautiful. From a practical point of view, I'd definitely recommend thorough research (and I mean thorough). But I imagine it would be quite an experience.

The main roads between cities are paved and totally fine for a regular car. But the stuff you're actually going for, the jailoos, Song Kul, the passes above 3000m, that's dirt, gravel, river crossings, and potholes that eat sedans for breakfast. Ground clearance is everything there. A Rav4 or similar soft-roader is the minimum I'd feel comfortable with.

Kyrgyzstan has been on my list too. From what I've seen, a sedan is fine for some routes, but if you're planning to explore the mountain passes, I'd probably go with something that has a bit more ground clearance. The scenery looks incredible either way.
