Will Google ban me if I link to a "shady" site or product?

Will Google ban me if I link to a "shady" site or product?

I want to build a content site around a specific niche. It seems that when people have been suspended or banned by Google, they were sometimes hurt by their site linking to an product that was then linked to something frowned upon by Google. It was the third step from your site, if I'm explaining it correctly.

My question is this: If I choose a "hot" product from Clickbank whose site links through to something not allowed by Google, will that give Google reason to ban my account?

It seems I have no control over that. What if I researched the product and its links very well in the beginning, but two months in, the product seller, who I am an affiliate for, changes their site and has a link in there that Google uses to justify banning me. This is what I want to avoid. Thanks.

Hi Chris,

You won't get banned if you only have few bad, spammy links. You WILL GET BANNED by Google if you have tons of them.

You can always control your backlinks by constantly checking them, using one of our tools: Traffic Travis and Affilotools or you may also get Google Webmaster tools.

The key to good and quality linkbuiling does not only depends on your off page SEO/backlinking efforts; it is also dependent on the way you track your backlinks. Constantly tracking your backlinks will avoid future Google issues.

Mary, it seems like Chris is wondering whether his site can be penalized for links he makes to other sites. Like if he links to a website (by promoting it as an affiliate), and that website links to some other dodgy sites.

Not backlinks, but forwardlinks. (Did I just make that up?)

I don't really think this is something to be worried about, Chris. Google might look at this kind of thing, but they typically don't take action on something unless there is a lot of bad stuff going on.

If you had a LOT of links to a LOT of products that were ALL part of what Google might see as a "bad neighbourhood", then you might be tarred with the same brush to an extent. But a few links to products whose reputations might go downhill... I don't think this is something to worry about.

Like you said, it's not really something you can control, and you shouldn't be expected to sit there all day monitoring the reputations of the sites you're linking to.

So long as you're not going out and actively TRYING to do this, you'll be fine.

Chris, I don`t think you will have any problem because that isn`t your website and you have no control over it.
You would be in a worse position if a bad website would link to you than if you link to it.
And another thing, this might happen with one or two links, not with all of your links, so I don`t think Google will have a problem with your website.
But, if you don`t believe us and want to be sure, you can check all your affiliates link once each month, it shouldn`t take you that much.
