Opinions on Gmail for marketing - Is it professional enough?

I havn't had a good week. My ISP closed me down because of a propagating virus that redirected my mail to other folks mailboxes ... and heavens knows what else! I took the computer in for a total cleanout and in the process they had a power surge fry my motherboard.

Got that sorted and Windows reloaded and antivirus check done, and bought and installed Norton Internet Security as I'd previously only used freeware and finally after a week got my mail service back on ... and whammo .. they've closed me down again. I'm 99% sure this is residual stuff which has been sitting waiting for mailboxes to be cleared as I've had a lot of unclaimed stuff coming back in the last day or so which went out prior to the 1st suspension.

The ISP is dicking me around. I've been using Gmail as a backup service and I have to say I am pretty impressed with what I have seen.
If this thing is not sorted smartly I thought I might just switch all of my mail over to there. Heaps of storage, no spam worries, the mailings are professional in appearance and it is certainly a giant step up from the likes of Hotmail and Yahoo. Can anyone see any problems going down this track, eg is the address 'professional' enough for marketing purposes?

Comments please?

Gmail is fine. Use it for personal use and use your email from your webdomains for business use.

PS: Your ISP sucks lol Sorry to hear about that...

I use hotmail for most of my personal emails, not that I have anything against gmail, it's just that I've had the same hotmail account since I was 15 or so :)

I've grilled them tonight and they've put me back on. Only spam getting through at this stage though ... and I should be getting the good stuff through.
If it happens again, I'll probably use the Gmail account I've opened. It sounds like it should be fine for personal emails and signup replies, newsletters etc. Anything relating to or stemming from my domains I'll use the email facility there.
Appreciate your comments.

Sorry to hear about your rough week Dale - I feel your pain. My server got hacked a few months back - what a pain to try and get everything back in order.

Gmail is great for personals, I've been using it since they introduced it with no problems.

How do you know when your server is hacked? (Other than if your site is gone)

Gmail allows you to set up a bunch of "from" addresses and then for each email you can choose which one you'd like to use from a drop-down list. It also lets you receive email from up to five other email accounts, so long as they have pop3 access. If you've got more than five email accounts you want to check, you can set up the additional email accounts to forward to one of the five allocated accounts (do this in your cPanel).

Sounds like you've had a bit of bad luck, check out those features and see if it's going to help you out. It does look more professional if communication from your domains comes and goes through a yourdomain.com address, but a Gmail address does (in my opinion) look better than a Hotmail or Yahoo address.

All the best,
Mark

I first noticed it when I got an email from Google saying my Adwords ads were paused due to dead links. My links go through Adtrackz, which is a link cloaking/tracking app that resides on my own domain. Apparently it's database had been tampered with causing my links to fail. Then when I checked my wordpress blogs, all my posts were gone or messages scrambled.

When I contacted my host and they said someone had spend a couple of hours in my account uploading and downloading hundreds of files... what they were doing I don't know but I found that I was hosting two new websites that I was unaware of

It was a real mess. I spent days trying to unscramble everything and then finally decided to just scrap it all and just start all over. Everything I had done had been all trial and error so I figured I'd use what I learned, rebuild and move on

Still an absolute shambles - all day today running antivirus programs at the behest of NZ's largest ISP. After countless calls - I'm not sure if we are any closer.
If not sorted next time round ... I'm outa there!

Why are you so intent on using your ISP as your email provider? Just use that email for everything and hard to switch over I am guessing? I don't even know my email my ISP gave me... went straight to another one.

Just the whole hassle of it all. But if my passwords have been hijacked as well I'm going to have to go back into the many programs I've joined to change.
- so it makes sense to do both. An address book a mile long. Anyway .... here goes ...

Hi diogenes,

Another great thing about Gmail that no one here has mentioned (well I dont think they have), is that you can get your business emails through Gmail too!!

I.e. for some of my website clients, instead of going with their NZ ISP or through my web hosting, I setup their domain name (i.e. mysite.co.nz) using Google Services called Google Apps.

So all their email addresses are [email protected], [email protected] etc, but they are hosted by Google!!

The obvious advantages is that you have a massive amount of storage with Google, and you can download all your email using Outlook etc, but also keep everything on the server without any hassles. Also, with Google basically taking over the world at the moment, the likelyhood of their servers going down is pretty low, so your email is pretty much safe in that respects. Oh and the best part is that it is FREE!!

https://www.google.com/a/

You don't have to be a business to set this up, you can use your own domain name. The setup can be a bit of a hassle the first time, but once you know what you are doing, it is actually really easy.

It might be a bit of a side track from what you initially asked for, but that is just my 2 cents on the issue.

Cheers

Some great advice there and not at all a sidetrack. I will put your suggestion to good use with my web clients.

Appreciate this ...
