Search engines don't "look down" on your site if your domain name has dashes on them. You should always keep your users/visitors in mind when deciding on things like domain names, content for the site, images, etc. This is because users ultimately decide what they like and what they don't like. Having dashes on your domain name is fine, but most users don't really bother with punctuation when typing domain names.
I suggest you keep your domain name unique/interesting and easy to remember. The following might help:What Would Make a Better Domain Name? How to avoid losing traffic from a poorly chosen domain nameHow do I choose a domain name?
