Should web designers know something about web development?

Do web design and web development overlap? As a web designer am I supposed to learn something about web development too? What are the best websites to learn a bit of Javascript? I am told some banners with Javascript do better than HTML. Is it true? Or is my question vague?

Hi kallayprasanth05,

As a web designer, it helps to have knowledge in web development as well, but I don't think it's a necessity. It happens that as you learn web design, you learn a bit of web development on the side too as the two go together.

W3Schools have Javascript tutorials as well as EchoEcho.com and CodeAcademy.com. I don't think javascript is better than HTML as far as banners go. I suppose there are some functions or commands easily done in javascript than HTML.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Yeah Cecille's great!

And I also like www.codecademy.com their teaching system is good and fun too.

It's good you want to learn to code more people should learn, it is now mainstream soon school children will be taught coding basics just like grammar and arithmetic!

Interesting thought there that children will be taught coding basics. I agree though that as marketers, we should learn a thing or two about HTML. It's not a necessity since we can always hire someone to do the coding if needed. Still, it's one of those skills/knowledge that's handy to have.

Have a good day!
