Problem with website stalling

I am having a problem with my website stalling. Often when I try to click on a page the site will stall and the page just won't load (or will take a couple of minutes to load). But worse than this is that it happens even more frequently when I click on the affiliate links (which could stop someone from buying through my links). The funny thing is that if I click on another page on the site it will work just fine. And then if I come back to the page with the problem after a few minutes it will work again. I have built my website on Wordpress (using Affilotheme) and I'm being hosted by Hostgator. Does anyone have any thought on this? BTW, I emailed these issues to Hostgator and they replied with the following but I don't understand their suggestions - are they useful?:

This could be an issue with wordpress or an issue with the connection you are on.

The site loads fairly instantaneously for me and in multiple locations around the world, (checked using internetsupervision.com).

You may want to install a caching mechanism for good measure.

We recommend all of our clients running wordpress use w3 total cache on their wordpress sites with preview mode off, and full database and object caching.

Is it one particular page that has the problem and the rest of the site works fine? If so try stripping elements from the page then re-adding them one-by-one to see which is effecting page load.

No, it randomly occurs to different pages and links.

I have only used Internet Explorer and I wouldn't know anything about clearing cache. But I will look into ccleaner. Thanks.

BTW, you seem to be implying that this is a problem with my computer and how it is set up rather than with my website. Is that correct?

I get the same thing - it actually gets worse when you clear the cache. I am also with Hostgator, but had the same problems when I was with Affilorama. I am running on Firefox with WP sites.

Your visitors will be getting their info at normal speed, but it is a pain in the butt when you are trying to work on your site! There is one other site that I visit regularly that gives me the same problem, especially when I have left it's tab open and worked on other stuff for a while so I put it down to the internet connection that I am on - you are not with Telstra clear are you?

Yes, I am with Telstra Clear (on a cable plan). But I used to be with Telecom and I had exactly the same problem with them.

The same thing happens to me while I am working on Wordpress - I click on one of my posts and it just refuses to go there. Have you had that problem too?

Yeah. Posts, pages, updates, widgets ......

Sometimes it is a good 5 minute wait before the page loads, then I have a really good run until it stalls again. Sometimes hitting another button works, but when you are waiting for a page to update it is really frustrating.

Strange I find it better having cleaned the computer, it will be slow at first until it caches again

But also sometimes find this happens to me In Australia on standard line at work but not on optus fibre at home so if its the connection there is not much you can do if you are on the best available here

always have trouble with IE when building sites, you should use firefox its better

just clearing cache on computer is usually not good enough if you havent cleaned your registry for some time it will play up
i use ccleaner regularly

It not how your computer is set up its how it is performing

Also check you plugins so they are not conflicting, turn them off and try

Some wp sites this happened I needed to reinstall from dashboard-updates-reinstall and it fixed similar problems

They are suggesting you use w3 total cache plugin for hostgator as I have friends that have had similar problems with them

Yup, using W3 and only have 2 plugins installed in one of the sites, so I do think that it is a network problem.

Try watching On Demand TV programs as a streaming download on our internet network - it's not good :)

I use Hostgator and Netspace (or is it iinet now?) and I also live in AU and have never had a single problem using XSIte built sites. They are always fast to load, to work on and browse with either IE or Firefox. Having used Wordpress for a while I'm not that impressed as my Wordpress built sites are slower and sometimes hang for a while as well. They are a pain. Seems to be deficiencies with Wordpress if you ask me.

I agree though, ditch IE and use Firefox but the issue is we have to cater for visitors who use all browsers not only Firefox.

Easyrider,

Do you have any plugins installed? I had a huge problem with the W3-Cache plugin. It caused different bad behaviors on a couple of my sites. Once I disabled it everything worked just fine.

You may want to disable your plugins one at a time to see if one of them may be causing your problem.

The WP-Cache plugin has been recommended to me by two different sources (including Hostgator). It is claimed that this makes your pages load faster and it requires much less CPU processing than using Wordpress by itself (since it stores static versions of the site). Now you are telling me that it caused you problems. What have other people's experiences been with this plugin? Does Affilorama have a view on it?

Greg,

The reason I had the W3 Cache plugin installed was because it was a recommended plugin in the AffiloJetpack area of the forum.

I have hosting at Hostgator and my site kept crashing. The problem was that the htaccess file kept appending itself, repeating the contents of the file literally thousands of times. The Hostgator staff kept repairing the file but it kept happening and nobody seemed to know why. Finally I came across a tech that suggested that I remove the W3 Cache plugin. I did and there have been no problems since.

A friend was having a problem with his site. When he would press the update button for posts, the posts weren't updating. I told him about my problem with the W3 Cache plugin. He disabled it and was then able to update his posts.
