Hi, my name is Mark Ling. Right now I’m a reasonably well known internet millionaire with over 10 years experience to share with you. However, rewind the clock back 10 years and it wasn’t always so rosy for me...

Back in 1999 I was stressed, financially poor and depressed

10 years ago, I was still at University, and I wasn’t in a great place in my life. I had always been one to dream big, the problem was, reality was starting to kick in and I was feeling pretty down. While I knew I was smart enough to be able to follow just about any career path I set my mind to, I was stressed out because there was nothing at all that I felt that I would enjoy.

I’ve actually never enjoyed any job that I’ve ever had. I can’t stand the boredom and repetitiveness of my previous jobs when I used to work for other people, to the point where I used to get nightmares.

Ok these were just part time jobs while I was studying at university, however personally I have a lower threshold to boredom than what most people do and I sure did move around my various part time jobs. I didn’t last in any of them for more than 4 months.

I must admit that some of the papers I was studying at university were interesting, but unfortunately they weren’t the ones that lead to a career. Any of the meaningful subjects were boring as anything and I spent a number of years jumping from major to major in search of something that was right for me, so I wouldn’t be doomed to working in repetitive jobs all my life.

In the meantime many of my friends graduated and started working full time, while I was left making little money as a part time pizza delivery boy, and in another part time job that I had in a call center.

Then I discovered Affiliate Marketing

A friend of mine called Charlie told me that he had built a website on a free hosting site called "Geocities", and he'd put a banner on it linking to a site that sold posters.

That's not what was so amazing.

What was amazing was that very soon he started receiving checks in the mail for about $50 each month. Just for having that banner linking to the poster site. He just sat on his butt, doing nothing, and receiving checks for $50.

For me, $50 was the same as working 10 hours delivering pizzas. I absolutely had to try this.

Of course, I'm polite, so I asked Charlie if he minded if I also built a site like his to see if it worked for me, and he said "Go ahead. There are plenty of posters out there to promote."

So I started doing keyword research, finding out what people were searching for and building website and content that was relevant to what they were searching for, and I made commissions by advertising various products (e.g. online dating, dog training and so forth).

This was one opportunity I was NEVER going to let go by

All I needed was to see that my friend Charlie was making money doing this and that was enough for me to know that I could do it too...

Once I’d made my first sale online I realized that I would be able to scale this up to a huge level and I was extremely determined to make this work.

I was fueled by motivation towards quitting my part time jobs and also saving up for a nicer car and this big trip to America that I wanted to do with another friend of mine.

I worked hard at this and it paid off

While it was a relatively simple system that I followed, it was time consuming and boy did I put the hours in. Once I’d seen my first check arrive in the mail I found myself skipping just about all my classes and I was working 14 hours a day pumping out content and affiliating to various offers.

I didn’t know how long this ‘Affiliate thing’ would be around for. Now, millions of dollars and 10 years later I can see that I haven’t even scratched the surface yet as there seems to be more people going online every day and more and more offers to affiliate to. It’s incredible.

But anyway, back to my story...  By the end of 1999 I’d made enough money to quit my part time jobs and spend 6 weeks traveling around America with my friend Chris. When I got home I had saved enough in affiliate commissions while I was away to buy myself a Nissan Skyline (which was a pretty nice car at the time)

 

I dragged my father into this too

If you're looking for proof that anybody can do well as an affiliate... take a look at my father. Yes, my OWN dad! A couple of years ago he was getting up every day and going to work at the same government department job he'd been working for 32 years. Then there was a change in management and he was suddenly expected to be doing much more work with much fewer resources, and his health was suffering with the stress.

In the past he'd regarded my online businesses with some skepticism, but he'd never really asked questions. He must have gathered that I had earned enough to support myself at university, because I hadn't needed to wait tables or work in a gas station like other students.

I guess the stress at work finally gave him enough motivation to start looking at other options, and one day he came right out and asked what he needed to do to be able to quit his job.

I told him I would come and sit down with him every single day for one month and teach him what he needed to know, and at the end of that thirty days he should be making money. We did just that — every day for one month I came to his house and taught him how I make money — everything from registering a domain name, finding good products to promote, setting up a website and more.

I must say it was a little strange and a little frustrating... for so many years he was my teacher, and now the tables had turned... but we both knew what was at stake here, so we stuck with it.

And one month later?

Ok, so perhaps one month was a little optimistic. By this stage he had a website online and had grasped a lot of what he needed to know, but three months later he had started making regular commission paychecks, and within 6 months he was making a full time living online.
These days my father is earning more than he was at his old job, with nowhere near as much stress. Not only that, but at the ripe old age of 62 there's no reason why he can't continue earning this income well beyond the usual retirement age.

Now, I'm proud of my dad, but did he possess any particularly entrepreneurial skills before this? No — he'd worked the same job for the past 32 years. Does he have a background in advertising or marketing? No — he worked in statistics, and that's about as far removed from advertising as it gets!

Add to this, he's from Malaysia so he didn't have the benefit of English as a first language, and at his age he was no spring chicken!

Someone who plays the online computer game ‘World of Warcraft’ may type into the search engines ‘wow strategy guide’ if they are looking for tips on how to play the game better.

Currently at the time of writing this, my website, www.wowblackbook.com ranks #3 in Google for the phrase ‘wow strategy guide’ (note: wow stands for ‘world of warcraft’).

 

 
So there is a good chance that they might click and visit my website and if they do, there is a possibility that they might buy a ‘how to play world of warcraft’ strategy guide from me through my affiliate link.

With hundreds of millions of people going online every single day looking for information in all sorts of niches, I manage to make fantastic commissions promoting a wide range of information products in this manner.

All I’m doing is being the middle man. I’m matching potential buyers with the products they are already searching for.

Here’s another example, someone might type into the search engines ‘stop dog jumping’. They then find my dog training affiliate website and they then click on one of my affiliate links and if they buy one of the products that I recommended, then I earn up to 75% commission on each sale.

Or they might subscribe to my newsletter, and perhaps a few weeks later I’ll send them an automated email recommending a dog training product and they’ll buy it then.

Or there may be a live launch going on in a niche that I have a lot of subscribers in, so I’ll promote it and make huge commissions.

There are a LOT of things that you can learn on the path to becoming someone who makes a full time living from affiliate programs.

Other marketers will try and sell affiliate marketing to you as a get rich quick scheme. It isn’t and you’ll be disappointed if that is what you are looking for.

It’s NOT a Get-Rich-Quick Scheme – But it is a genuinely great business opportunity

It IS a super exciting, low cost, fun way of making money, with huge potential to be taken to a high scale, should you have the desire and motivation.
