Lesson #1: There are two main ways to make money on the internet:

Sell your own stuff
OR
Promote someone else's stuff.

Ask anyone who is making money online how they got started, very few will say they dived straight into building their own stuff and selling it. Way too risky! Most will say they started off promoting other people's stuff, usually on their website or through a mailing list.

Lesson #2: People who promote stuff are called Affiliates.

An affiliate (sometimes called an affiliate marketer, associate, partner, or simply "online money-maker") is someone who promotes the products of another company and receives a commission or some other payment for each paying customer they find.

“Welcome to Widgetorama.com!”

For example, you build a website promoting different types of widgets. Someone visits your website, thinks your description of one particular widget sounds exactly like something she's after, and clicks through to the widget manufacturer's website. If she purchases a widget from that website as a result of your promoting... you get a commission.

What this means is that you only need to promote the widgets -- you don't have to build the widgets, stock the widgets, deliver the widgets, process payments or provide support for the widgets. What's more... commissions on widgets can be as high as 75% of the sales price! THAT'S how important your marketing is to the widget manufacturer!

What sort of products can I promote?

A common misconception is that affiliates only promote computer software, like anti-spyware products, or unsavoury products like gambling websites. (Or widgets for that matter.)

This is quite untrue. As an example, I promote products dealing with everything from relationships to learning an instrument, language courses to dog training. All of these have very high paying affiliate programs, and they're certainly not the exception. No matter what your interest, there's bound to be an affiliate program for you. (I'll show you some examples of different products in my free video lessons... more below!)

How much money will I make?

You will earn as much as you're prepared to work for! There are affiliates out there earning over $1 million per year (not to brag, but myself included), and there are affiliates earning $2 per week. How much you earn depends on how much work you put into your campaign, how many products you promote, and whether you use effective techniques or fritter your resources away.

To give you an idea... one of my own products, Rocket Spanish, sells for $99.95 and pays affiliates 75%. Even if you only sell ONE copy per day of this extremely popular online Spanish course, that's an extra $27,300 in your pocket per year. If you can duplicate that success for other products then the sky is the limit! In my free video lessons (keep reading!) I'll show you screenshots of my earnings for some affiliate programs, just so you can see what's possible.

How much money will I need to get started?

Very little. For the most part the only investment you really need to make is time. Certainly, if you have some money available it can speed up the process, since you can hire people or purchase products to do the more time-consuming tasks. You'll also typically need to set up a website, with hosting and a domain name at negligible costs (about $4/month and $8/year respectively). No huge initial investment means no risk if you decide it's not your thing.

Do I need any special skills?

No, you can be the most regular Joe (Joanne) Bloggs to ever stroll the block. A basic ability to use and search the internet is all you really need, and I'll teach you everything else in Affilorama. Obviously it's important that you have the motivation and dedication to follow my advice, otherwise the best teaching in the world is no good to you. Be warned: Making money online is not an "easy option", it's not a walk in the park, and it's certainly not just about "cutting and pasting" your way to instant success. Anyone who tells you different is, quite obviously, selling something.

Who is Mark Ling anyway?

You're right to ask! I've been involved in affiliate programs as both an affiliate and an affiliate program manager since 1999. I started learning about affiliate marketing seven years ago, and now at age 26 I own six companies operating out of Christchurch, New Zealand (you'll notice my accent when you watch my videos!), with affiliate earnings of over USD$1 million each year.

I think that's pretty cool.

Even though these days I also make my own products (check out the Jamorama story in the newsclip here) I still make a lot of my income as an affiliate, and I strongly believe it's the best way to start making a living online. I even trained my own father — a 57 year old government worker — to make money online, so he could quit the job he'd worked for 32 years and be financially secure going into retirement.

  • Seminars scare me. I'm fine one-on-one, but get me up in front of a crowd and I'm a mess. (I'm sure I'm not the only one :)

Let me repeat what I said before: Becoming a successful affiliate is hard work. You do need to put a lot of time and effort into your work. It won't happen overnight. But you can do it. CASE STUDY: How did this man go from working long, hard, stressful hours in the corporate world... to living the life of his dreams in under 2 years?

If you're looking for proof that anybody can do well as an affiliate... take a look at my father. Yes, my OWN dad! A couple of years ago he was getting up every day and going to work at the same government department job he'd been working for 32 years. Then there was a change in management and he was suddenly expected to be doing much more work with much fewer resources, and his health was suffering with the stress.

In the past he'd regarded my online businesses with some skepticism, but he'd never really asked questions. He must have gathered that I had earned enough to support myself at university, because I hadn't needed to wait tables or work in a gas station like other students. I guess the stress at work finally gave him enough motivation to start looking at other options, and one day he came right out and asked what he needed to do to be able to quit his job.

I told him I would come and sit down with him every single day for thirty days and teach him what he needed to know, and at the end of that thirty days he should be making money. We did just that — every day for thirty days I came to his house and walked him through the exact same process I've outlined here in Affilorama.

And thirty days later?

Ok, so perhaps thirty days was a little optimistic. By this stage he was making SOME money, but not as much as he was making at his job. But NINETY days later... that's a different story.
