Trademarks and domain names - how close is too close?

Hi again :)

Just a question re trademarks and possible domain names. If I choose a domain name and check uspto.gov to see if there's a name clash, and there is a slight variation on the db (not the exact one) does it mean I'm alright to go with the name? Is it okay if they are NOT identical? Or do they both have to be absolutely identical for a potential issue?

As an example only (I know its a stupid one but anyway...)

If I want a domain name called "blue industrial energy guide"

and there is an entry on uspto, "blue widgets industrial energy audits"

Is that kind of thing okay? Or is it too close? How does that work with trademarks? Obviously in this case both would be in the theme of industrial energy.

thanks
Paul.

Hi Paul,
Without knowing the exact names it's hard to tell.
But from your example you gave there is nothing wrong with it.

For ex: If you register the domain mysocks.com and there is a trademark for yoursocks then that's fine.

Just my 2 cents..

Troy

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize
they were the big things.
