i have done it both ways. personally i like to set min e up on a unique domain. when you set it up on your main domain, all links count as internal links. if you do it on a different domain, you get credit as backlinks....Great for SEO
so for example, I would have my site set up http://www.mysite.com
and blog set up at http://www.mysite.net
there are many benefits to this including backlinks, and keeping your domain to yourself. otherwise, someone else can come along and buy the .net version, and you have to fight the competition trying to steal your business.
if you just cant afford the extra $15 to buy the domain, I would go with a kw optimized subdomain.
so instead of blog.mylovesite.com I would do buildinglovetips.mylovesite.com as an example.
I actually have a reversal of this set up on a test site that I am running. l have a blog on the main domain for a general topic, with subdomains set up for more specific topics within the niche. each subdomain is set up AB style, with the same header image background, and layout so they all match, but each one is loaded with articles for that specific topic.
I run a strong community on the blog, and funnel the traffic to the sites. been testing this for several months, and have about 6 months left on the test to see what I wanted to see.
