Submitting to free directories - still good or become bad?

Hi,

I've just started out in web marketing and following through the 90 day plan BUT
It seems to be a common concern among those in the seo community that submitting to free directories can do more harm than good. I'd be interested to hear what anyone else's (particularly Mark's) experience is on the topic.

Submitting to these free directories is good (from my experience) so long as you don't link back to them. More sites linking to you with good anchor text is helpful.

Directory submissions are only a small part of your overall strategy, but they are helpful.

I've seen webpages of mine (on long tail search terms) jump up in the rankings from directory submissions alone. But I'd recommend combining with a solid linking strategy including article submissions, and also web 2.0 methods listed in my blog post:

yes I listened to your interview with Mr K last night - just brilliant. I'm a web designer new to Affiliate Marketing so although I still feel a little bamboozled with all the options, all makes tech stuff makes sense.
