How to check your SEO progress?

I suspect this has been covered somewhere else, but after reading lots of posts I still do not have a good idea of how to check my SEO progress. I have found some tools that will check the first 300 pages in google results, but beyond that I am not finding anything.

Can someone suggest tools & methods to chart progress at early stages?

Thanks.

really, if you are not within the top 300 pages, just keep building back links until you are.

I use traffic travis pro, and set results to check the top 800 positions, as my site progresses, I lower it to the top 200, and leave it there.

Thanks James. I suspected this was to be the approach, and it helps to have some confirmation. Backlinks it is for now, then. Maybe I will find some very easy search term to practice on for a bit.
