Hi nathanglowman,

There a several ways to earn money from a blog:

    1. AdSense - You can post AdSense ads on your blog and get paid for each user click. You can also let other sites advertise on your site through banner ads for a fee.
    2. Affiliate Marketing - Recommend or promote products on your blog and get a commission for each purchase made through the affiliate link on your site.
    3. Advertise your talent/skill - If you're a writer or photographer, web designer, baker, etc. You can use your blog to showcase your skill and gather contacts/customers through your blog. It's not earning directly through your blog, but your blog becomes a tool for you to reach your target market.

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

With a blog your going after SEO traffic as a strategy right off the bat which is good. Key is to pick yourself a good authority blogging platform and create good on-page seo rich post as well as consistent various backlinking or off-page seo.

It all just takes time. Understand that if you create a blog today your most likely not going to get rich overnight but with a little steady, consistent work then sure why not!

I think one of the worst ways to get started making money online is starting a blog.

The big secret in internet marketing is "the money is in the list."

An autoresponder is more important than a blog. Some of the most successful internet marketers don't even have a blog. Many of them don't even do SEO.

With an autoresponder you can set up a newsletter series and promote affiliate links. The great thing is that everyone on your list will see every single article in the exact order you want them to see it. Whereas with a blog, you have no control over what your visitors do.

Do yourself a favor and get hooked up with Aweber or similar software and start building a list. Once you've built up a relationship with your list, it will be so much easier to start a blog because you already have an audience. Then you never have to worry about whether your site ranks in Google or not because you have your own traffic source.

While I agree that building a list is important and where the money really lies, you need a base or foundation for that. People will not just sign up to your newsletter series unless they have been constant readers of your website and trust you and your content. Your website does not necessarily have to be a blog, but you do have to have a website with good, informative content.

Some of the more popular sites I know, including affiliate marketing sites, started as personal blogs, like Lifehacker. I have blogger friends too who are earning on the side by reviewing and promoting cosmetics and other beauty products as well as gadgets on their sites. The earnings aren't as big as when you have a list to promote too of course, but it's enough for them.

My two cents. Have a good day!

I totally agree with you that people are not just going to sign up for your newsletter. That's why you set up a squeeze page and offer a free report.

All I'm saying is, I hate to see people waste their time trying to do SEO only to find out nobody really wants to read their blog.

With email marketing you can quickly find out what works. Just buy some solo ads and correct course as you go.

I wish I could tell you how many hours and hours I've wasted trying to build a website first only to have to abandon it later.

When you build your audience first by giving away great free content in exchange for their email address, it's so much easier to know what to write for your blog because your audience will tell you what they want.

It wasn't until I saw a video by Chris Farrell that I started having success. He said that you first must pick a profitable niche and then build a list.

I immediately took his advice and built a squeeze page in the guitar niche to give away a free gift. Spent a few bucks on Facebook advertising and Adwords and immediately started getting signups. From that point I sent out a survey to my audience and got immediate feedback to what they wanted to learn about. I have very good open rates for that list

I'm not saying blogging won't work, but it's very time consuming. I like to hit the ground running.

But to each his own. :)

P.S. Don't take my word for it. Check out these great articles from Jim Cockrum:

Of course time is a factor but if you post regularly at least once a week, Submit to social sites and build a email list then you too can gain success. I love blogging and its great to be able to promote the tools that you use on your blog. Building a email is a cinch with this system [Link removed by moderator] this is brand new but is catching on like hot cakes...yes all your dreams can be answered....enjoy.

Sure! It comes down to getting traffic to your blog plus then converting that traffic!

When I hear the word "Blog" I almost always thing of SEO traffic! That is all find and good but today in 2013 you are going to need to leverage other traffic sources as well so when you wake up in the morning and google has decided to remove you and replace you with somebody else it does not shut you down.

Blogs are great in the sense of building yourself as a reputable contender in the marketplace!

What I personally would do is start a blog on my own domain and then go out and find some authority blogs and contact those owners and see If I can "guess post" leaving a link back to my blog.

Then I would start visiting all the social networking sites and find conversations that are happening in my market and niche and politely share my value including a link back to my blog.

When people come to your blog and they will then you need to work on converting that traffic.

You need to be tracking your traffic sources and how long people are staying on you blog as well as what they are doing.

Google webmaster tools and analytics is a great way to do this.

Remember the principle equation that Mark talks about:

$/sale x Leads x Conversion x $/customer = profit

1. $/sale is the niche you choose to be in. In some niches, no matter how much traffic or sign ups you just can break even due to the nature of the niche. In other niches, just a minimum amount of visitors per day can get you thousands of dollars per month.

2. Leads. Whether you get it through organic rankings and SEO or PPC and other ad placements (Facebook, solo ads, media buys), what matters is that you get leads. Again, not all leads are created equal - there are "freebie zombies", and there are buyer leads.

3. Conversion, or in other words: copywriting. You have to have some sort of conversion, because without this in place, it doesn't matter how much traffic you get. The reverse also applies, even with ninja conversion tactics, if you don't have enough traffic, you won't make a profit.

4. $/customer, or build a list. This is done to ensure long term profitability. Like Mark says, not all niches are fit to build a list in. There are some niches where people just want to buy one time, and then there are niches where list building is highly lucrative because people buy over and over.

As you can see, no one can really say: "the money is in [x]" with [x] whatever it is that someone is trying to promote or sell (ha ha). You can make money without a list, you can make money with a list, you can make money with a blog, you can make money without a blog, the options are limitless.

What matters most is: you find the one that works for you. Plus, what works for you might not work for another person. For everyone, the principle equation applies - you have to have all of them in place but you can choose on which part of the equation you want to focus on.

Cheers,

Another way of earning money from your blog is by writing product reviews for reputed companies. Bloggers are in great demand these days. All you have to do is post the reviews of newly launched products on to your blog and earn money in the process.

This is all great information. I'd really like to start making money quickly even if it's just $20 a month to start. I know if I can do that, I can increase it enough to eventually support my wife and I without having to work for someone else every day. I don't need to be rich, just pay the bills, put some in savings and have a little fun money.

Any tips would be apprieciated.

I think one of the best ways is to join a good affiliate program and insert your affiliate links in your blog with adsense ads, banners and you can sell your service and products on your blog.
