People will not just sign up to your newsletter series unless they have been constant readers of your website and trust you and your content. Your website does not necessarily have to be a blog, but you do have to have a website with good, informative content.
Some of the more popular sites I know, including affiliate marketing sites, started as personal blogs, like Lifehacker. I have blogger friends too who are earning on the side by reviewing and promoting cosmetics and other beauty products as well as gadgets on their sites. The earnings aren't as big as when you have a list to promote too of course, but it's enough for them.
My two cents. Have a good day!
