Google Instant - What are your thoughts?

This morning I landed on this - http://www.3news.co.nz/Google-unveils-i ... fault.aspx and I just wanted to know what effect this might have on internet marketers like us.

Is SEO dead?

Would love it if you shared your opinions with everyone on this forum.

Pretty cool, kind of. But kill SEO? Heck no! If anything, it might make it all that more important!

It won't affect SEO at all really. this one affects how quickly results may show up, but it won't affect the rankings once people hit the right keyword.

I personally think it's going to be good for long tail keywords but again that's all speculation. We just have to wait and see how it works out.

When I use Google I still click on the list from the drop down box, or keep typing. I am not distracted by the instant results,

In other words it hasn't change my habits.

This will be depending on your site size is my guess. I think Instant search will have the functionality of showing up results for long tail keywords for big massive authority sites to related terms on top. To get rid of the few page sites from the top, that has previously been able to outrank big authority sites with well choosen domain name and tightly focused few page content.

Per google, instant should not affect your seo rankings at all. it is about showing results based on what it thinks the user is typing. however, the example was used, if you are targeting flowers, you should not try to target "flow" with your keywords. Google will see this as not relevant to your site, and wont rank you well for that keyword.

instant has nothing to do with the ranking system, or who's site will show up first. it is all about which keywords their search feature "thinks" people are searching for, based on popular search querries.

In a way, instant isn't really "new". For some time, Google has been showing you content it thinks you are going for as you type a word. What IS new is that it is now showing results based on the keyword it thinks you are going for. Which it might draw some away from a keyword your searching, but I wouldn't think it would pull much.

Yeah but think about it a little there are tiny sites all over the place or used to be with a few pages and a keyword or two in the domain ranking highly. With google instant google is going to be able to stear pepole away from these sites and instead show authority sites related to keyword searched on top. While it will not affect seo in any way I think it will be more important than ever to build authority sites with rich content around the topic. Even if these pages dont contain the exact seo phrase searched for they are still going to show up higher in the searches than ever because of google instant.

I've tried Google Instant.

I don't think it's really going to have much effect on SEO as such. And don't forget you can switch it off as well.

It's more just a convenience tool for Google users. Or inconvenience tool - as I tend to regard it... http://www.breakingout.net/2010/09/10/google-instant/

Google Instant is indeed just another way of displaying search results. The underlying principles of getting ranked still apply and are not affected at all.

Check out Matt Cutts's take on Google Instant. In case you're not familiar with the name, he is the head of Google’s Webspam team.
