getting re focused

I have never had trouble staying focused while I work on my sites and writing articles and have been doing this for 3 years now. I spent over a year putting my biggest site together and as soon as it was done I decided it need 20 more pages so I spent another 6 months more working on it when I was finished I took off a couple weeks to relax because I was spending 6 and 7 days working on it.

When I came back I had no trouble jumping right back in but made sure it was at a little bit lesser pace. However for the past few months because of parents major illness and some other things that I stopped working on any of my sites for a while. I tried to do a little while all the problems were going on but couldn't seem to get anything done.

Now that everything is over and I don't have to worry about people's health because everyone is alright I can't seem to focus on what I need to do. Most days I just get on the computer and look at all the news articles and stupid stuff.

I have written a few articles and read them over and re wrote them and they are ready to be put on my site but they have just sat there for weeks. I just keep screwing around. As I said I have never had any problems focusing on what I need to do and getting it done but this time I just don't seem to be able to put everything back in gear.

I spend all day in front of the computer and do little or nothing or read articles about how to do something on my site different or better. Any one have any ideas or have gone through this problem and how you got over it because again as I said I have never had any problems with motivation or focus and I am still motivated but just can't seem to focus on what I need to do. I have lists of what I want to get done everyday but just don't do any of them. Thanks Mark

I totally know what this is like. What you need is momentum.

Take your list of tasks and pick 2 (only 2) of the most important tasks and make those 2 tasks your mission for the day. Do not allow yourself to browse online or check email when you sit down to work until those 2 tasks are complete. Do them one at a time with full concentration until each is finished.

This will retrain your brain to be goal oriented and set the bar low enough that it is easy to accomplish. If you still feel like doing more after these 2 tasks then choose another 2 important tasks from what is left and get them done.

Hi Mark,

I agree with swarlley. You need to get back on track, and the way to do it is to do it one at a time (or two at a time as he suggested). Baby steps, so they say.

You mentioned all you do now is browse and stuff... I suggest you give meaning to it and set a time. If you are going to browse, make sure that you are browsing through sites related to yours. Read more about the niche you're in, look at competitor sites and see what they have. At the very least, your browsing is not a complete waste.

Also, set a time. Make sure you do this only for an hour or two. After that, move on to the two tasks you're supposed to do. Or, you can start with the tasks first, then as a reward to yourself, browse. :)

Hope that helps. Have a good day!

Hi Mark,

I think what you've been going through happens to everyone at some point in time. And yes, you need something that will inspire you to get back on track. You need to clear your mind of all "worries" (i know this is unavoidable but you have to) in order to think "straight" on what you should be doing to be productive and more successful.

Planning well and getting organized is a start. Perhaps you should try to follow a certain schedule to everything you do online. :) Getting your milestones done is a good start to be productive.

I hope that helps!

It has been a while since I posted this question and had a couple days after posting it that I was far too busy with other family medical stuff to even look at your comments but it is funny but the day after I was done with the family stuff I got on the computer and finished the web page I was adding to my site and wrote 2 new articles one for Squidoo and right now I can't remember the other one was. Maybe just telling people about what was going on was enough to re focus because I haven't had any problems since with the exception with the hurricane that hit my state of New Jersey and had to take in some family members for the last 5 days as well as checking out the damage to there houses. But also just read your comments and am happy others have good ideas on how to get through something like this. Mark

Hi Mark,

Glad you're back now. I hope that you and your family are okay despite the unfortunate event :)

We are always here to help. And yes I agree that it's quite refreshing to read previous comments/threads. Somehow when you're down or just plain busy, it all comes back to your goals after reading great comments from people :)

Hi Mark,

Sometimes saying it out , or writing about how you feel and putting it out there, helps a lot. It helps you to sit down and what exactly you're having an issue with.

I'm glad to hear you're back and that you and your family are safe! :)

Have a great day!
