First time at setting up a website

Hi everyone, new here to affilorama

Hi all, My name is Lisa and I am new to affilorama. I am a single mom in Iowa trying to make the best of things for my 13 year old daughter and myself. I have been trying to find a way to make a little extra money on the internet for the past 2 or so years with very little success. I found your affilorama one day and had a great feeling of hope, so here I go. I don’t know very much about making or designing a website, didn’t even know that you had to pay for a name and hosting. I have been watching your videos and have been learning a lot but know I have a long ways to go. My daughter and I both have a love for dogs so we thought we would start there. She had fun making the banner for the top of our website. Anyway will someone please look at our site and let me know how it looks and if we are doing things right. It is just the front page so far and nothing is clickable yet, still trying to figure out how to do that part.
Thank you all and I am happy to be here.

Hi Birddy44,
Welcome to Affilorama!
I have had a bit of success with Affiliate Marketing, but no where near as much as some of the people on this forum! So for help with affiliate marketing, you should await their reply.

I am a web developer, so can help with the design aspects etc of your site.
If this is your first attempt at making a site, I commend you on your effort! Great start.

One thing I recommend is that you review your colour scheme. The colours on the site clash a little bit and makes it hard to read.

But all in all a good start.
PM me if you need anything!

Cheers

Hi Lisa,

Welcome! I recommend you hang in there and keep watching videos and stuff. Make sure you go through the 90-day roadmap and follow that as much as you can.

Your site seems to be sorely lacking in content! I would concentrate on getting that sorted out first and foremost. Sounds like you've got a good research assistant there to help you out as well :) Take a look around in dog forums and see what problems people are having with their dogs, and try to put together about 20-30 300-word articles on subjects related to dogs. Sounds like a lot, but 300 words is pretty short.

Keep going... nobody gets there overnight :)

Hi Everyone,
Ok we started over and have finally figured out how to kinda use dreamwaver (wow that is a piece of software that can be frustrating for someone that doesn’t know anything about it)

So if anyone can look at our site and give us your advice it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Wow Lisa!

That's a huge improvement, good work! Keep going like this and you'll put the rest of us to shame! I recommend that you just keep adding more content. Work through the 90 day roadmap (like I said last time) and keep charging!

Make sure you've taken a look at the SEO lessons/videos with Marc Lindsay et al. I notice that you don't seem to be using H1 tags (big main heading tags) and your file names could do with having their words separated out by hyphens (eg, dog-barking.html instead of dogbarking.html). Also make sure that you've got your keywords in your page titles (inside the <title> tags)... at the moment it just says "knottiedoggie" and NOBODY is going to be searching for that just yet :)

There are probably a few on-page factors like that. They're pretty simple things to do, but so many people neglect them, and they're a real pain in the proverbial to go back and do later when you've got a hundred pages.

And yes... I agree with you on the Dreamweaver front. I've been doing Dreamweaver lessons for the revamped affilorama and I'm having trouble wrapping my head around that piece of software... and I'm a web designer! Hah!

Keep going, good luck!

Hi Aletta,
Thanks for your time and advice, sense I last posted I had been looking at the SEO lessons and I have just changed all of my H1 tags and I also changed my title tag. Thank you for pointing that out though. now I believe it was not a waste of time to change all the pages lol. I also went in and changed the image directory so my images should have the right address now. I have yet to change the file names, do you believe that a file name of dog-barking.html instead of dogbarking.html will make much difference? If so I can do that as well.

I think my next step should be getting my ads by google on my pages but don’t know if I should do that before submitting my site to like google yahoo and msn. All this information is a little overwhelming right now of this newbe so any advice is very welcome.

Thanks a million guys
Lisa

Wow birddy! That looks very good. :D

About the google adsense:

You need a lot of traffic to make any money on any adsense program so it might be a good idea to continue working on SEO, backlinks, articles submitting etc.. to get people to your site before looking at placing ads.

Just food for thought. You can always do it anyway, it's just a suggestion.

But if you do make sure to enter your 5 digit pin number as soon as you recieve it after you reach $10 USD or your account is disabled.

good luck.

The way Google checks the accuracy of your contact and payment information is by sending out a pin once you've earned $10 through AdSense. If you don't enter your pin, I guess they assume that you didn't get the card, or that you've died, or something like that. They give you a lot of time to enter it... at least 4 months from the date the pin is issued.

The 90-day roadmap is a little out of date now (it was recorded two years ago!). We'll be (hopefully!) putting up another beginners' roadmap, but it might take a few weeks to put together.

Feel free to keep the questions coming, I like the easy ones! ;)
