Are PBNs recommended?

I have read a bunch about PBNs and have gotten mixed reviews. Does google look kindly on them as techniques for ranking? what are the ways that you can get penalized for PBNS

 I would not personally invest in PBNs as these are considered black hat. I would rather do guest posting or publish my articles on different social media sites.

 That is blackhat SEO and soon or later it will get you in trouble i will not recommend it.
