Amazon Affiliate Smackdown! ILLINOIS

Hi All,

If you live in IL like I do and are an Amazon affiliate, then check your email. You have just been terminated because of a new law that was signed today by Governor Pat Quinn(ochio). The law requires that Amazon charge a tax for the sale of any products that are referred by affiliate marketers. Amazon refuses to process this tax and instead has decided to terminate its affiliate program.

Anyone have any advice about incorporating in another state?

Thanks,
Carl

I do much more with Amazon UK, than Amazon US.

Not nearly as many affiliate and plenty of UK specific Products to promote.

Many brands, such as LC TVs and Aspire laptops for example, have products with unique model numbers for the UK and Europe, as they are made there. These models have plenty of searches and a tenth the compitition.

If you had already been excepted for Amazon US affiliate program getting excepted for Amazon UK is a snap.

There are other Amazons through out the world too.

Hope that gives you and idea.

Hey JC,

Thanks for the reply to this thread.

I've often thought about doing some AM targeting overseas markets because the competition is different.

Anyway, I can't escape the law and Amazon will not renew my membership as an affiliate anywhere in the world because my business is located in Illinois. I have to either move (not likely) or accept that I cannot be an Amazon affiliate.

Or, I can incorporate a business in another state and be okay. I was just looking for someone who went through this already.

There is one other state in the US I believe that outlawed tax free Amazon shopping, which resulted in the termination of those resident affiliates as well. Maybe it was Colorado. Not sure at the moment.

Best,
Carl

Do you really need to be incorporated, or have a business, to join Amazon Affiliate Program? I don't remember.

Any way;

There are other affiliate programs for physical products, Best Buy and Walmart, for example.
What ever you promote I am sure you could find another vendor with a affiliate program.

A lot of the bigger ones are registered with Commission Junction.

If others turn you down because of the state tax thing then I guess you will need to get an out of state address.

Hey Carl,

Did they freeze / retain your funds?

@JC,

I've thought about entering a UK market too, but the SEO escapes me, and I wonder if I could use my normal routines to promote a UK site. Do you have a different strategy?

The strategy is the same, just targeting specific products that are only available in Europe.

For example the Acer lap top model 5742z was made in the UK and only available in Europe. It has the fraction of the competition that American laptops have, but plenty of traffic. You have join the UK amazon affiliate program to promote it.

You simply SEO for the model number in this case "5742z" "5742z review" "Acer 5742z".

Wow, that is really a bum deal Carl. The websites you have already dedicated to Amazon products you could sell off if the products are not sold in the UK should you go that route. I live in Ca. and have not heard anything like this "yet", but it does give me the gitters. I think I'll check out the UK market.

Also, I am happy to hear that you can be an affiliate for the others you mentioned James. :) Thanks for that. I'm helping a friend start her own Amazon aff. sites. We just completed the first one, but now I think with this news we'll add in some UK and Bestbuy aff sites.

Carl, digitalpoint and flippa for selling off any sites and even perhaps to some in this forum. :)

Best Wishes,
Chrisi
