If you haven't done it already, your first step towards domain-name ownership is coming up with an idea for a domain name. You can do this the old-fashioned way with a pencil and paper, or you can use some more high-tech tools to speed up the process.
For the more old-fashioned amongst us, all you'll need is a pencil and some paper, and maybe a thesaurus. Just sit down and brainstorm!
Once you come up with an idea for a domain name, you'll have to check if it's available. There are hundreds of sites out there that will do this for you, so there's no need to be particularly fussy. It helps to find a site that will check a bunch of TLDs ("top level domains", like .com, .net, .org, .info, etc) and come back with a variety of "available" or "not available" responses. So even if the .com address isn't available, you can see if the .net or .org address is available instead.
A good site for checking this is namecheap.com, but pretty much any site that allows you to buy domain names can...
