Hi! Thanks for checking out my profile!
A little bit about me... I like long walks on the beach, the smell of swimming pool water splashed on hot concrete, pie, not gnomes, and ridiculous trousers of any kind.
I have been working with/for/around Mark Ling for about seven years. Prior to that I studied psychology and graphic design, and taught myself web design using Notepad and a whole lot of trial and error. I have also been known to write some things and nag a whole lot when things aren't as cool as they should be.
I know a lot about web design, HTML, CSS, and why your website is behaving strangely in Internet Explorer or Firefox. If you ask me about any of these things I will tell you in tremendous detail.
But that doesn't mean I'm not, like, so cool.
Are you using our theme or some other theme? Thursday, March 11th, 2010
Mark talks about this in the AB introduction video.
From the notes:
"If you can track the income over a period of 6 months or so, you can usually get 18 months to 4 years income as a sale price of your website!"

I got so fed up with this that I just say "I do websites and internet stuff" now. Come to think of it that doesn't sound much better does it?
I say "I make the internet".
That gets a chuckle.
Then you apologise for the fact that internet banking is so slow around lunch time, and say that it's not really your fault.

You can switch to PHP 5 through the AffiloHost cPanel. Under "web tools" there's an option to switch PHP versions. Click that and switch to 5.
Unfortunately it comes with PHP 4 by default.

Don't we wish :)
No, Twitter doesn't pass link juice through to other sites. The links are no-followed. If that worked, Twitter would turn into a massive link farm for internet marketers :)

Oh, and on that note... How many of you guys find your friends sort of go into this like, FLAT LINE communication zone when you start talking about what you do online? Lol... it is actually pretty funny sometimes to see how glassy eye'd my friends become when they ask me what I do and when I give them the answer, they are like.... "...............................?"
I get "So... is that like spamming?" all the time.
ALL. THE. TIME.

But it's not mission-critical.
Often when you aim a domain name at keywords you end up with something completely unmemorable! And it might take you a LOOOONG time to find an available domain name with highly searched for keywords in it.

"This Affilorama group are good, even though they do come from down under.. and proves to me that the people from new zealand have come a long way since I was in NewZealand in the 1970s.. You should be proud"
It's all since we got electricity in the 80s. Everything's been on the up and up since then.

From a web designer's perspective, it pays to have a few different browsers at your disposal to keep track of how your website looks to the people in your market. They're not all on the same page quite yet. On this little laptop I have Firefox, IE7 and Chrome going, and this is just for travel ;) At the very least you should be checking Firefox and IE7 (or 8, but I'd prefer 7 since 8 is probably sitting closer to Firefox these days.) Design using Firefox. Then check that it's not completely mucked up in IE.
It's very easy to get all browser-snobby, but if a large proportion of your visitors are using a particular browser then you need to make sure your site is usable. Although IE6 is an exception. We're tired of IE6.
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp is a useful site for keeping tabs on the rough proportions. (Just be aware that these stats come from their own visitors, which is probably going to be more heavily skewed towards web professionals, meaning that the usage of "relic" browsers in reality is probably higher than is reported there.) You can also check your own stats using whatever analytics package you're using on your site.
Don't use this as an excuse for hanging onto IE6 though. Do the world a favour and upgrade!

I think you've got more of a chance of blowing up the office printer than the kettle. Whatever you do, don't touch the air-con. I have enough battles with Nick over that one, without another person joining in! Commented on Monday, February 9th, 2009
