Another option in locating a professional proof reader would be your local community or college newspaper. Community newspapers often employ people who work part-time. As such one of the paper's proof readers may be amiable to accepting additional work.

You can easily judge the quality of their work by the newspaper's published articles. In this way you will know whether they can deliver on their promises.

Another option for you is to look at eLance, oDesk and Freelancer. You can post your proofreading project there or browse through their list of contractors. Most of the time, you can see a sample of the contractor's work in their profile along with feedback from previous employers. These will help you gauge if a contractor can deliver the work output you require.
