I need to get a standard dedicated SSL certificate and am wondering what the best one is in terms of cost, customer service, how well it works, and minimization of hassle (I'm not a technical person).
I know that with a promo code that you can get an SSL certificate from Godaddy for around $12 for the first year. But some of the reviews on them have been extremely bad (ie. very difficult to activate for a newbie and very poor customer service).
I am also considering Hostgator which is a lot more expensive, although they are considered almost legendary for their customer service. Furthermore, this is my hosting company so it might be easier to get it with them so that they will give me overall support, which I won't get if I have hosting with one company and the SSL certificate with another company.
Does anyone have any recent experiences regarding these companies (and any others) which they can share?

I suggest you go with HostGator since you get hosting from them as well. They provide good customer service so you're assured to get good support as well.

I would like to suggest some of the top SSL certificate provider at the very less who are the platinum authority of major SSL Brands such as RapidSSL, VeriSign, GeoTrust, and Thawte on global scale. They also offer platinum SSL support for 24/7 hours for 365 days. They offered me RapidSSL at just $7/yr and also they are really cheap for Extended Validation SSL and WildCard SSL certificate.
List of Top SSL reseller (Platinum Authority of Major SSL Brands)
Rapid SSL
The SSL Store
SSL Renewals
Ask for them latest coupon codes for any SSL brand

I would say that you can proceed with HostGator since it's been your hosting company. But i would like to suggest even more higher certificate authorities like Verisign, Thawte, Geotrust, Comodo and GoDaddy.
But recently I heard from one of my friend that Comodo's SSL Certificate doing better since they are very much dedicated to keep their customers ahead and adding to it they have also ensured that Comodo SSL is 2048-bit ready to keep their customers safe for the next 20 years. I think this would be a better choice.

I agree with Cecille, contact your host first. Ask if your hosting account supports a dedicated SSL and if they accept SSLs from providers that they are not affiliated with them. Some hosts only "supports" SSLs that are bought from them.
