We have been told to try and have good titles for our pages for our title tags but does it mater if the title tag matches the url. Example the page name and title tag is dog and cat information but the url may be example.com/dogandcat. I know we have been told to try and match most things like the title tag and try to use something close to the title tag in the beginning of the article but I don't remember seeing anything saying try and match the title tag with the actual url. Anyone know

Hi Mark, If you run a Wordpress blog with permalinks turned on, then every time you post it automatically takes the title of the post (which is also used in the title tag) and converts it into a-pretty-url-like-this-example
So, I would say yes to try to match the URL to the title tag of the page. I am not sure whether you need to include common (or stop) words like 'and', 'what', 'if'. I guess if you have optimized your title tag then include every word in the URL

Hi Mark,
If you use wordpress, set permalinks to /%postname%/
This way your URL will be your title as Essexboyracer said above. If you are not using wordpress, then yes, the url should still be the targeted keyword phrase, however, in your example, it should be separate with dashes like this:
example.com/dog-and-cat

Mark,
The way I do it is just to make sure the target keyword for the page is within the Title tag and then make sure that the keyword is in the url.
Example:
Title tag: "7 Tips on How to Get Your Ex Back"
Keyword: get your ex back
url: markssite.com/get-your-ex-back
Regards,
Jon

Yes Mark. I put the dashes in the url. I put the dashes so the visitor can see the words well and know that they're on the right page of what they're looking for.
Compare this: markssite.com/getyourexback
to this: markssite.com/get-your-ex-back
With the dashes, it just reads better especially with long tails. That's my 2 cents.
Regards,
Jon

Mark,
As esolutions and essexboyracer mentioned above go to Settings>Permalinks>Custom Structure and put /%postname%/ in that field and you will automatically get links with the dashes.

If I am not mistaken, permalinks in Wordpress are automatically the title of the post unless your theme states otherwise. Having the title and the permalink the same makes it easier for both you and the users to know what page on the site you're on. Saves you time too from having to come up with a permalink for your pages.

The default WordPress permalink setting is for a structure that uses the page id number and looks like this /?p=123
Some themes (such as Affilotheme) change the permalinks to Custom Structure and set it to /%postname%/ so that the page title is used in the url. You end up with something like this /this-is-my-post-title/

@ Cecille,
I sometimes change the words after the mysite.com/
Example:
"WoW Rogue Guide – Rounding up the Rogue" - this is the title of the main article but I will only have the words "wow rogue guide" after the /
So instead of of mysite.com/wow-rogue-guide-rounding-up-the-rogue
I will have mysite.com/wow-rogue-guide
However, if I am going to have more pages on the site that talks about the wow rogue guide, then the succeeding articles/content need to have their titles as the the permalink.
Regards,
Jon

Hi Jon,
If the permalink will be long, like in your example
the permalink for that will be
'http://www.mysite.com/wow-rogue-guide-rounding-up-the-rogue'
It would be best to shorten it like you do and have it as something like http://www.mysite.com/wow-rogue-guide.
