Just bought a domain name. Yuppie! How do I use ftp?
Hi!
I just bought a domain name, and everything is set. I am using KompoZer to build my site. Now I need to use ftp to host it. While the domain name was affordable from http://www.namecheap.com/, web hosting is a bit expensive. Since I am an affiliate, I don't want anything fancy.
I need to find publishing address, and with web directory name. It follows a format like "ftp://ftp.example.com/www" or "ftp://ftp.example.com". I never got any instructions. I just installed fireftp plugin, but don't know what my next steps are. I don't even know what my host is. Is my ID, and password the same one for my domain name, or do I use new ones? Please help. I am doing good with one sales page, and will continue, but don't want to get stuck with publishing.
Thank you very much.

Any help would be appreciated. This is my first website, so I am desperate to publish. Since I am a new affiliate, I cannot afford to pay a lot for the service. I won't be uploading lots either, just simple articles with few banners.
Thank you.
Thank you.

In order to publish a website you need two things, a domain name and a host. You seem to have purchased a domain name from namecheap which means you have a domain name. You will also need to get some hosting unless you already purchased hosting from name cheap. Many people use hostgator for hosting. Once you have hosting, you point your domain name at your hosting name servers which will be provided by your host. The purpose of the ftp to to upload your website files from your own computer to the webhosts servers.

@aston.. You can easily get away with a cheap name but dont compromise with the host.. Remember what you get is what you pay for... look for a host who offer you good bandwidth and enough space for an affordable price.... I would suggest Justhost... I am using them for while and their customer service is excellent.. There might be better.. this is my opinion..

Hi!
Yeah, I understand now. NameCheap has a pretty good deal for $19.95 a year, I get.
* 10 Spam Protected POP3 Email Addresses
* 2000MB Storage
* Unlimited Email Aliases
* Webmail
* Unlimited Autoresponders
Is this a good deal? I only have about ten articles, one sales page, and one review page. Should I put the review page on the first page, or the sales page? Both are pretty good. Thank you so much.

Hey Aston, I just checked the hosting package you were looking at with Namecheap. That package is email only. It doesn't host your website. Their basic website hosting package starts at about 39.95/year. You might want to take a look at other cheap hosting providers such as godaddy, bluehost or justhost which would host your website for less than $10/month....or odsol(I've never tried this one) which offers hosting at $7.95/month including a lot of features such as free shopping carts, CPanel access and free search engine submissions aside from giving you a 45 day money back guarantee.
You can visit odsol here -- >> http://www.odsol.com
or you can check other cheap webhosts here -- >> http://www.webhostingsearch.com/cheap-web-hosting.php

Hi!
I have a CAD $25 budget as I bought a gift card. I really am confident about my venture, but worry that I might be spending too much. Hopefully, I will find a good web hosting service with unlimited domain which can cover me for $25 yearly, or for six months. I really want to get to the top of google in "flight simulation" so I might have to find ways to get there.
Thank you for the help. I appreciate it.

Hey Aston, if you're just starting and confident about your venture, I suggest you try midphase's starter plan which is around $2.95/month which would be just around your budget. The drawback here is that for this price, you can only get hosting for one website. But, if you think about it, and your venture earns, then you can invest your earnings into upgrading into their $5.95/month plan which would give you the unlimited domain hosting you wish....
Hope that helps : )

dude, one really good source of learning stuff is youtube. I am sure if you search for How to FTP on youtube you get about a gazillion of videos. When you snoop around you will find that some of the stuff there is really good and you can get to learn a lot. I almost never fail to find a video on something i need to learn there... and its free :)
for example if you want to use FileZilla as ftp client wich is probably the best free ftp client
just goto youtube and type: how to ftp with filezilla
you should get about 1400 results :)
hope this helps

Another way to cover the hosting expense (not to mention your earnings from your niche sites) is to promote your hosting company within your website. Almost all web hosting companies have Affiliate Programs from which you can earn commissions for every customer you refer to them. You may opt to receive this commission through Paypal or as a hosting credit and use it to pay your yearly hosting and domain registrations.

Hello AstonMartian,
your best bet may be free hosting, where you can do everything drag and drop online, without even needing to do your own HTML editing and FTP. Weebly.com is a good option, so is YOLA.com. You can pick up a free guide plus free auto-responder at my site http://internetmarketingcoachingclub.com/get-kit/.
All the best!

I agree. You should shop around for a package that also compliments your needs and that has a good customer service team that is ready to help you out within 24 hours. You always need support at one point. I'm currently with IX webhosting and they have been pretty amazing so far.

I use total commander to manage ftp accounts.
After setting up the account it's just using explorer ( in terms of moving files )
