Building a blog with categories

Hi

I am a relative newbie with a couple of blogs up in a very simple post and pages form.

I have a couple of blogs like wedding gowns which I'd like to split up into different categories like bridesmaid gowns , articles , mother of the bride gowns etc . I dont want to create pages for this and I want to keep the posts for general information. Is the best strategy in this case to create categories. How exactly do categories and drop downs work?

Id appreciate a how to newbie reply since though I know a little , it also tends not to be very technical

Thanks a lot

1. Do a Google search on "wordpress categories" (without the quotes)
2. Visit Joost deValk's (WordPress expert, plugin creator and marketer) blog and search on "categories" to see how they affect SEO.
3. Search the WordPress "Codex" (manual). Got to http://www.wordpress.org and search.

Hope this helps...

Hi,

You can truncate categories in the URL if it gets too long, but setting them up correctly and leaving them as part of the URL can be a good thing for SEO. It's best to plan it out first.

Here's a quick plugin that makes category/subcategory listing cleaner:

I personally prefer to search a blog that has categories because it makes it easier to discover other related articles instead of scanning every page. I would create general categories and do subcategories as the blog grows for better structure and accessibility of the site. I would also make use of tags.

There are lots of blogs available to build a blog with categories. Search on Google and follow to best blog having its categories like you want. This method helps you to better understand the blog view and its categories as well drop down menus etc. After this, you can create blog's categories. In some seo link building service companies prefer this method to set a repute and standard of quality blogs.
