Should I Redirect http://www. to http:// ?
My site is indexed with Google under both www. and no www I do all my backlinking now using the non www url. My question is will Google see this as duplicate content in some way and should I do a 301 redirect in hostgator for the www to the non www. Would like some feedback on this. I don't want to do any damage to my seo.
Thanks Ed

Hi Ed,
I would sign up for Google Webmaster tools.
You can put a code on your site so google can track your site.
It will also allow you to tell google to ignore www or non www domains.
Just search Google webmaster tools in google.
More info can be found here..

Yes, Google will see it as duplicate content.
So you should decide if you want to use the www or the non-www version, create a 301 redirect accordingly, and set your preference through Google Webmaster Tools like Troy mentioned.

Hello,
I don't understood everything.
My AB site is a subdomain in Hostgator.
When I open my site with www.mysite.com it redirects automatically to http://mysite.com.
But I have no redirect at this domain. Is this normal?
And I start my back-linking in the next weeks: Should my links point to www.mysite.com or without www??
Most of my pages are already indexed in google, but they are all indexed without www.
Is it necessary for me to create a 301 redirect?
I'm a little bit confused about this. Can somebody help me?
Regards,
Waldemar

Troy,
I already have both versions verifyd in webmaster tools, so should I delete the one? Also where do I find the htaccess file to add the redirect code you talked about. I am using hostgator and I cannot find where that file is.
Thanks Ed
