Can All in One Seo Title Tag and the H1 tag be different?

I use Mark Lings AffiloTheme for my Wordpress website. I have the All in one Seo Plugin installed and wanted to know whether the 'all in one seo' title tag and can be different from the H1 tag provided by wordpress?

Will it harm my search engine rankings? I am not thinking to put totally different titles, just titles that complement each other, just so I could get the rankings.

Please let me know if anyone has tried this or has knowledge of whether this will be a smart move.

It's fine if your title tags and headings are different as long as they both contain your keywords :)
