Keyword Match Type in Google Display Network, Does It Matter

I understand that in the display network, the ads are placed according to the theme of the adgroup. So when using google display network, does it really matter what keyword match type you select?

The keywords used on the display network are considered broad match. You are able to add negative to help reduce the chance of your ads appearing on sites with those terms in them.
