Forums For Posting Affiliate Links?

So people spend a lot of time and money creating websites so they can rank them high in Google hoping to make affiliate marketing income. Has anyone tried posting affiliate links in relevant forum discussions? I know most forums don't allow outgoing links, but some do. Some will after a certain amount of posts or reputation. For example, if I'm in a biking forum discussion on the best mountain bikes that allows outgoing links, why not post my Amazon affiliate link to my favorite bike and get commission on whatever traffic I bring them? Would Amazon or other affiliate programs allow this type of strategy?

I have never posted a direct "affiliate link" to my comments on forums. What I have done is post a link back to a website that then directs the website visitor to the Amazon or whatever affiliate link.

Most forums would not accept an actual affiliate link. However there is still a way to send readers of your comments direct by using a redirect. This makes the affiliate link neat and inviting while meeting the regulations of the forum. In my opinion the best option is to send them to a website which provide the user with additional product information along with a link to the product's sales page.

You can probably find forums for any topic under the sun. Read their rules about posting links.

Not a great longterm strategy though...

Most of the really good forums that you'd like to place an affiliate link on, tend to not allow you to do so. I agree with Margene on the 'redirecting' thing. However, there are certain internet marketing forums that have entire sections dedicated to affiliate marketing. So, while you may not be allowed to have an affiliate link in your signature, you may be able to insert it in a few comments.

I'm not too sure though - could be wrong.

although some forums do allow it, it still is not a good idea. Personally, I would rather send them to my own site where I have a chance of getting them on my list, rather than just sending them off to be on someone elses list.

you have to take the long view of things, and try to build a long term business, not just one time sales.

Usually the do allow. Generally finding forums that allow your affiliate id is impossible.
