Im in Auckland and woke up to see it on our local NZ news. No deaths reported, 2 serious injuries, power and cellphone coverage down, sewerage and water issues. A lot of damage to older buildings in the central business area and to the surrounding suburbs. I will keep you all posted.

I believe the staff are off for the weekend. Hopefully none of them are injured, or their homes damaged.

I hope your Affilorama offices are still standing Mark and the crew. Must have been very scary. Sounds as though it's quite widespread in the outlying districts too. Even with a good infrastructure there are still huge problems. Good luck to you guys and stay safe.

Hey folks,

thanks for all the messages of concern. I'm located in Dunedin which is about 400km's south of Christchurch, so we weren't affected.

While I haven't been in touch with everyone, I believe everyone is safe and sound! There has been a reasonable amount of damage around Christchurch, and I haven't heard how our offices made it through. A lot of people are without power for the time being, so you might not hear from any of the team up there for some time, but I'm sure someone will post an update shortly!

i talked to some of the team in christchurch this morning there all safe not able to check out the offices as its in town area that has be closed from what i have heard i think most of them are spending time with there family.

Well, I just checked out the office cam. It's dark (nighttime) there at the moment, and it seems even a little darker than normal. Not enough light to see fully, but if the cam is still working, I'm going to take that as a good sign that the Affilorama offices weren't too badly damaged. Of course, you can't really see anything right now. Maybe in 3 or 4 hours, we'll be able to see more. Don't know why I didn't think to check the cam earlier. Still, like I said, probably a good sign if the cam is still working. :D

the web cam froze thats the last shot as the earthquake hit at 4.35am if you look at the time and date

the offices are in a old brick historic building and going by the news reports here in NZ i would be suprised if it made it through in one piece the staff wont be able to go check it out till the CBD area is open as its not safe with aftershocks bringing stuff down. so the webcam wont be up will someone can go in the office to reboot it.

I heard about this state of emergency some hours ago. Our friends at Affilorama and their families were the first people to come to mind.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I believe that areas of Victoria Australia are being evacuated due to heavy flooding today, too.

It seems that people in NZ, Australia and America are all in need of prayer. Please be safe everyone.

After Haiti, Chile and Vanuatu.... now Christchurch in the beautiful NZ. So sorry for our dear Kiwi buddies. Hoping reports are correct and that no one was killed. Praying that all receive the comfort, support and assistance that they need. Following a State of Emergency, donations are generally quick to follow. Will be going online to Red Cross to make a donation - only way I can help! Trust that all other Affilorama Members out there around the world will also donate online. Your downtown area looks like it really took a hit from the earthquake (locked in time by the freezing of your webcam in the office). Please let us know -- when you can -- how you all are.

We´re all concerned, but thanks god no physical life´s affected so far. Hope to hear from the offices direct that everything fine, apart form the shock values of course. Thousand miles away, but in this moment of hearing the earthquake news in Christchurch, I realized this is more than making money online.It´s making relationships online and those turn into transactions.

Mark has made a few posts in the jetpack forum, but he probably wasn't online long enough to see this thread. He just got home from his vacation in the middle of the chaos, so it will probably be a little rocky for a few days. they cannot get to the office, but not all the staff is in Christchurch, so some will be able to keep us up to date on what is going on.

Yeah, the earthquate was really strong. I live 150km out of Christchurch and I felt it.
The Christchurch CBD seems to have been hit hard. And yes, we are still experiencing the aftershocks of the quake.

Actually I was home for the earthquake. We are all safe though thank goodness.

Our house shook like crazy, it was extremely loud the whole time and very creepy as the power went out so it was pitch black at 430am and there was a constant loud rumbling sound to go with the huge vibration.

It went for ages, there were over 20 aftershocks too. But damage in our place was pretty minor in the scheme of things, just lots of mess, open drawers, some glass breaking, nothing too major really. Although some others weren't so lucky with their houses falling to pieces, and some of my friends had their houses flooded (just a low level of flooding, but still damaging) due to broken pipes etc.

On a world scale, this wasn't huge I guess, although it's apparently about a billion dollars worth of damage to the city as a whole. Luckily it was the middle of the night as a lot more people would have been caught in the crumbled offices, flying bricks from older buildings etc, if it was during the day.

What a mega crazy night! We've still been getting aftershocks, might go on for days.

Just found out there was an earthquake in New Zealand while in the Warrior Forum. Checked Google for news about it. Looks horrible. Thanks for the update from those that live in or near Christchurch. As soon I heard earthquake and New Zealead, I thought of Mark Ling and the Affilorama Team. My prayers are with you all.

I did hear about the NZ quake, but did not hear about ChristChurch being hit until just now. Then it occurred to me that the folks at Affilorama were there.

I'm in Christchurch and during the quake all I could think was, if its this bad here in Christchurch, Wellingtons gone. I have a bach in the Marlborough Sounds and was thinking that it would be histroy also. It was quite good to find out the quake was close and no body was hurt.

So, does anyone know when the last earthquake to hit the Christchuch was? Curious as to how frequent earthquakes happen there. I know that New Zealand is very active for earthquakes but from the looks of the older brick buildings its seems that it has been a good while since any earthquake activity has happened there. I don't think they would purposely build brick buildings knowing that this could happen.

This particular fault line last 'quaked' 16,000 years ago. Although I've heard there are reasonable sized earthquakes every 300 years or so. Most of the buildings have been earthquake strengthened already which is why most of them were much less affected than the ones you saw in the photos and that's why there was no loss of life.
