Security concern with requests of SIN

Hi, I was just checking out LinkShare and PayDotCom and I noticed that both require you to provide them with a social insurance number. How safe are these sites I don't really want to be giving out my SIN especially with all the identity theft going on in recent years.

Any comments are appreciated.
