How do you explain to people what you do for a living ?

Just wondering how other people tell new people they met what they do for a living.

Especially, the older generation with grey hair.

Met some people during the weekend and they just had to ask. "So what do you do for a living?"
I got caught of guard and with nothing prepared and it was a mess.

What do you say, when people ask ?

I say I'm a consultant. :) I used to say I'm a Project Manager because I used to manage a couple of online stores.

You can always say " I work at home, promoting products/building websites." and variations of it if you want to get asked all sorts of questions. Not to mention be given weird looks by the older folks. Some people just don't get it. So I suggest you use a "title" like I do, just so you can move on if you're in a gathering and not spend the night discussing exactly how you make a living online. ;)

My two cents. Have a good day!

If you are with a group of friends who seriously want to know then you may go into detail and fully explain.

However, if you are at a party and a passing acquaintance asks what you do I believe I would give them a fancy descriptive title and leave it at that.

Most people at a party type event are just trying to mingle and the question "What do you do for a living?" is a standard conversation question.

This is actually a question I was just talking about in a program I was recording LOL, I tell people that I am a WEb Publisher and a Web Marketing Consultant. No matter what you do, you will get wierd looks. People don't see that online businesses are taking over many spaces, and has had a huge impact on the economic struggles that retail stores are fighting to overcome.

Haha I love this post. I just tell them I'm an entrepreneur. Then it leads to what do you do? And you can discuss your IM ventures or informational products, or whatever you specialise in.
I do like the "consultant" one above as well.

You can tell them, "I earn a lot and I earn at home without doing anything. Just monitoring people visiting my website." :)

You're quite right - I have also found it rather difficult to describe what I do in conversation; I'd like to say I have an advantage and could just tell them my job title here at Affilorama, except that I'm sort of the 'everything' guy here, and don't really have a single specific job title, so even that doesn't work!

What I've started to do is just say "It's complicated" and leave it at that :P

(Which, amusingly, has led some of my friends to jokingly hypothesize that I'm a secret agent working for the government)

Its your option if you tell them or not.
I prefer not to if I think they will not understand.

Some good tips.

As of yesterday, I am going to start saying that I am "unemployed" and say it with a smile.

Being your own boss, you kinda are.

Will report back next week...... :)

Them: "So, what do you do for a living?"
You: "You know the internet?"
Them: "Yeah."
You: "I work there."
