Thank you for the explanation! and it got to me 'just in time' as I am planning to post my first site in the next 48 hours. I am not having to revamp (thankfully) because I already learned from you that being in business is something you should believe in and plan to work at. Those that go to affiliate marketing to make a quick buck may make a few, but the people that want to build a business for the long term I think will be rewarded. I never thought that you were encouraging the 'quick buck' people. Your information is much to valuable for that.

Thank you for all you have done for so many of us.

Hey Jeff,

Great comment there.

With the extra articles, what you are providing here (as opposed to the alternative) is options for the user. They aren't locked in with no way out, because even thought the link is unobtrusive at the bottom of the page and isn't shouting out to be clicked on, if the user is looking for menu options for other things to do (lets say they were looking for free information on your page and not to buy something), then the options are there, such as articles, etc.

However in order to make your site convert well and actually profit from google adwords against the competition, especially if you are paying high bid prices, then you want to encourage people to do what you want them to do. So your page should be laid out so that they are presented with your offer, and then there are menu options should they not find what they are looking for on that particular page of your website. Hence adding to the user experience.

The alternative that google doesn't appear to like, is the single page that locks people in like a prison with no way out other than the 1 option you give the user.

I don't see this as a loophole, I see it as a method of achieving what google wants; yet still keeping conversions to sales high (for those willing to buy). I also have got sites human reviewed by google (in order to fast track them back to adwords) that are in this format and they have been given the thumbs up from the adwords team.

I also believe strongly in providing high quality articles which will help the users experience, aid your chances of viral growth (word of mouth, etc) and also if search engine optimized properly, provides a great opportunity for free traffic.

Hope this helps,

Best regards,

Mark

Mark,

Pardon me for being a bit negative about this post. Aren't you perpetuating the practice that Google is trying to discourage by their shakeup in the advice you provide?

This is all about visitor experience and I agree that adding quality content to a site is a good thing from that respect. However, linking to it with a link that is quote:

"reasonably small and unobtrusive and unlikely to attract much attention"

suggests that it isn't there for the benefit of visitors and to improve the quality of the site, but purely to create some adwords 'loophole'. Not very positive eh?

Regards,

Jeff.

Yes, thats the conclusion I have reached too. But I have yet to figure out how to replicate what I thought was a very smart large collection of obscure long tail key words into the landing page! What about, for example, spelling mistakes keywords? Google seems to be shutting down the long keyword list operators. Thought of just listing the keywords through links to a page down a level or two, but then there are lots of clever Adwords operators like Shoemoney out there looking for that information. Anybody found an answer?
