12 Best Wordpress Plugins

Saturday, April 26, 2008

posted by affilorama

Hi Guys,

Following on from the last 2 days videos about setting up and customizing your wordpress blog. I’ve got some recommendations for plugins. You don’t have to install these if you find that part complicated, but for those of  you who are familiar with how easy it is to do (and there are instructions on each website that I list), these are fantastic!

Here’s my top 12. I invite you to comment on them or whether or not you have others that you recommend:

Adsense-Deluxe
http://www.acmetech.com/blog/adsense-deluxe/
Part of Google Adsense’s terms of service is that you do not display more than 3 sets of Google Adsense ads on each page. Adsense-Deluxe allos you to place google ads as part of your template or in your posts, while ensuring you don’t break Google’s 3 ads rule.

Google Sitemaps
http://www.arnebrachhold.de/projects/wordpress-plugins/google-xml-sitemaps-generator/
By having a Google Sitemap, you’ll be able to keep your blog as up to date in Google as possible. This Google Sitemaps plugin will create a sitemap of your wp blog that is Google compliant.

Feedburner Feed Replacement
http://orderedlist.com/articles/wordpress_feedburner_plugin/
This useful plugin forwards your feed traffic to feedburner.com. That way you can use their many cutting-edge features for subscriber analysis and feed presentation.

Gravatar
http://en.gravatar.com/
I just found this one today, it’s a great service which shows up custom items associated with various email addresses of users who post comments on your blog. It’s another way of adding more personality and splice to your blog.

Head META Description
http://guff.szub.net/2005/09/01/head-meta-description/
Many search engines, such as Google, display your description meta data in their search results. The problem is, wordpress usually uses the exact same meta data for each and every page on your website. By installing this plugin, you’ll ensure that you ahve a dynamic description meta tag for every entry you put into your blog, which is automatically generated based on the page content.

Optimal Title
http://elasticdog.com/2004/09/optimal-title/
This is very essential for SEO purposes as it lets you put the title of your blog posts before the blog title, rather than after your blog’s name.

All in One SEO Pack
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/all-in-one-seo-pack/
Some features:
* Automatically helps you to avoids duplicate content found on most typical Wordpress blogs
* Optimizes your titles for search engines automatically
* You can override any title and set any META description and any META keywords you want.
* Automatically generates META tags
* Allows you to fine tune anything you want.
* It is backwards-compatibile with a lot of other plugins, such as ultimate tage warrior, auto meta and many others.

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-23-related-posts-plugin/
This is a great way of getting your readers to read more of your blog posts because it automatically displays related posts that you have made.

Permalink Redirect
http://scott.yang.id.au/code/permalink-redirect/
One of the frustrating things when you check through your stats is that wordpress urls with a trailing slash are the same as ones that aren’t, yet show up as separate pages. It’s also frustrating from an SEO perspective as many search engines treat these as separate pages. Luckily there’s Permanent Redirect, which issues a 301 (permanently moved) redirect if anyone accesses your page via the non-permalink web address. This will help you from an SEO perspective and keep your stats clean.

Ultimate Tag Warrior
http://www.neato.co.nz/ultimate-tag-warrior/
Tags are one of the most interesting things that Web 2.0 has brought to the internet. Thanks to Ultimate Tag Warrior, you can join in on this and tag your posts. The main reason for tagging is that it assists in narrowing down for others what the post is about and it provides and easy way of getting around your site. It also give Technorati a great idea of what your post is about so that it can index it correctly. Technorati is another great place for driving traffic to your website, hence this is an essential tool.

Akismet
http://akismet.com/
Spam has got to be one of the most frustrating parts of owning a wordpress blog. It seems like the moment you’ve set up your blog, you start getting incoming spam comments. That’s why you need to install the Akismet plugin, which eliminates a LOT of your comment spam problems.

WPCron for wordpress backups
http://skippy.net/plugin-wp-cron
Wordpress Database backup is included by default in editions 2.0 and above. However the plugin is much more useful if you also install WP Cron because it’ll automate the backup process for you. This is a more advanced plugin and not necessary for newbie/intermediates who might find it tricky to set up.

I hope that you’ve gained a lot of value from this blog post. Please post your comments and suggestions for other great plugins.

All the best!

Mark

I use several of the blog plugins you recommended already (google sitemaps, Akismet, and All In One SEO. All are useful and easy to setup plugins which will help a blog to get found, and ranked in search engines for some free traffic.
I have also downloaded some of the others you recommend, and will give them a whirl. I also rediscovered Feedburner thanks to your article, and have started adding an email subscribe for updates (not everyone uses RSS feeds to follow websites).
Thanks for a useful article Mark.

Hi Mark,

Just wanted to update you on the permalink redirect plugin.
Since the advancements in WordPress 2 series that redirect is now built into the basic WordPress blogging software.

So there is no need for it any more.
This saves everyone so much time and stress.

Thanks to everyone providing feedback to WordPress they have finally added some pricesless built-in features.

Eagerly looking forward to the NEW Affilorama site!

Hi Mark,

I have installed most of the 12 plug-ins you recommend. (In fact, now I’ll install the balance on your recommendation).

I have found Akismet and the All in One SEO Pack to be the most valuable for me. All the spam is very frustrating and Akismet takes care of that and the SEO pack has helped me optimize my site with ease.

Also , I’d like to encourage anyone who is non-tech oriented to take the plunge and install some plug-ins. No one is more non-tech oriented than me and if I can do it, you certainly can.

Just start with one and go from there.

Thank you Mark for your continued great content.

Great info as usual, I hve used all of these plug ins on various blogs with great success.

Have you come across Zemanta? Whilst not strictly a Wordpress Plug In it is a great free tool for improving your blog. I would strongly recommend it as a tool that should be in every bloggers toolkit.

Its concept is simple: It gets the images from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and various stock photo providers, and lets you pick them out and place them into your post.

Hi Mark, I’m a tad fuzzy here. I’m wondering if some of the plugins will cancel each other’s effectiveness out or interfere with each other. I ask this not fully understanding each plugins’ function…ie…

It sounds to me that the Optimal Title will cancel the All in One SEO Pack out…same thing for Head META Description and Optimal Title. If so…which one of the plugins would you recommend to do the described function? ~~gourmet coffee snob~~

From Affilorama: Hi, if you opt for the all in one seo pack, then you won’t need optimal title by itself, yes. I actually only discovered the all in one pack yesterday and think it looks wonderful, that is why I hadn’t removed the other recommendations that is covered inside that pack because those are the ones I use currently (although for future blogs I’m going to use the all in one pack as it saves time!)

Thanks Mark, I’ve just found couple of new ones I didn’t know about yet. ;-)

I posted the list of my 10 most useful WP plugins at:

- I think they’ll add to your list nicely
especially WP database plugin (so you don’t lose your blog!),
and Smart update pinger (so you can edit your posts without overpinging), not to mention a very useful Social bookmarking plugin so people can easily add your blog to SB sites
+ couple of other useful plugins… ;-)

Hi Mark

I discovered you some time last year when I was using internet cafes. In this part of the world we struggle a bit since telecommunications facilities in 3rd world countries are very expensive. There are various political reasons for that. But I am hopeful that with more and more people like you Mark the world will be a better place to live in in future. The prices for hardware, connection costs and bandwidth are very high everything is designed to cater for the elite only. If you you were to add to it the cost of the tutorials and the free software and sources you make available I realize you are doing a fantastic job. I would not be able to make a start as I am confident I will with so much of your passionate and generous contribution, honestly. However I digress.

I have borrowed a laptop which I am going to be using occasionally to start my internet business. Last year you closed membership just when I had secured funding to join and your charge was nothing considering the information you provide. As it were, it’s mind boggling that you can do this for free. People in the 3rd world like me are going to benefit immensely from your generous efforts.

As I was saying last year I came across your six part mini course and it is to me awesome as it removed my newbie cobwebs and suddenly everything about internet marketing became crystal clear. Your tutorials are the best I’ve come across in terms of clarity but you go the extra mile and provide pdf’s which is even more awesome. Thanks a million keep it up. I tremble with excitement to think of what you’re going to produce with your coming soon.

I am about to set up my Wordpress blog using your tutorials, again tour video makes it so simple I am now confident. By the way I tried to use other tutorials they were not as simple as your’s. But I only discovered your’s about setting up wordpress recently because you provide information overload Affilorama Website and one doesn’t spot things readily. Maybe if you had an overall index since you provide so much and almost everything that one needs to get going. But again I should imagine the coming soon might probably be even better.

I conclusion I realize it might be difficult for some people to master the clique of my name and people are inclined to call me “Zola” which is a different existing name that means something else when pronounced with the “Z” sound. My name means “peace” and the other means “be calm”, all our names are attached to meaning literally. So I prefer you call me XB. Website coming soon. Your plugin list again highly useful and as usual thoughtful. And all you guys with comments very helpful Hopefully I will bring valuable and relevant comment in future. Pardon me for being irrelevant to this post on the most part I had to express my feeling of appreciation right now. Sorry if it offends anybody.

Cheers for now.

Xola “XB” Nuse.
